Temps too high?
Hey fellow abusers, new AMD user here...just built a box that's got a Barton 2500+ running @ 2.2...my temps at idle ~47 C - seems pretty high. the VCORE is set at 1.7. Full load, it gets hot....57-58C (reported by Motherboard Monitor 5.3)
My ambient temps are a bit high as well (~33-34C). I have the retail HS w/ arctic silver (installed correctly)...Have plenty of cooling as well (two front intake fans (1 over the hard drive), and 1 sucking air out the back).
Case is an Antec SX630II, 300W pwr supply. I have a Shuttle AN35N Ultra 400; read somewhere that this mainboard runs a bit hotter than other brands...anyone confirm that?
Ran Prime95 for a while, and didn't get any warnings/errors.
Is my Barton/system gonna die an untimely death? Should I get a better cooling solution?
Would appreciate your thoughs/suggestions.
Thanks all,
LP

If you're using Retail Cooling
Get an SLK-800/900 and enjoy the breeze.. I've got an SLK-900A running a 92mm fan and my temps on an 1700+@2.174ghz is 38*C Full Load..

From my experience the Barton's tend to run a little hotter than the Palomino or TBred core chips. I have a 2500 running at MHz with an Alpha 8045 with a huge ass Delta fan on it. Under a full load I never see temps over 50-51 and that is on a hot day. I would say your ambient temp is a big part of your high temps. For a stock cooler I dont think you are that bad tho but obviously a better cooler would lower your temps.

That isn't bad for just retail cooling. And yes that shuttle does run the cpu a little hotter than others. I am using the same one now.
As dad said, your ambient temp does effect the cpu temp. When room temp changes so does your cpu temp. Also, does your case have decent cooling? Try running with the side panel off and see if the cpu temp changes. If it does, then you need better cooling.
Better cpu coolers include the slk900a, slk800, sk7, volcano 12, silent boost. Either are much better than stock.
Still though, your temps are within AMD specs. But most of us prefer lower temps because things usually last longer. Yeah, like we'll keep these setups for over 3 years.

If you're serious, then that may depend cpu to cpu. But I'd stay under 60c.
And another reason we like things cool is when we trade or sell our setup. We want them to last for the next person.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Glad to hear it's operating within normal parameters. lol I'm cheap..gonna stay with the retail cooler for now...but thanks for the recommendations. Maybe if someone wants to get rid of one on the FS forums.
heck, if it dies that'll give me an excuse to maybe step up to something a bit faster.. heh
Airpizza - the stock cooler only comes with the thermal pad. If you do get one, I recommend getting some Arctic Silver, and get rid of that pad. Flying Penguin and some other guys posted a good how-to guide on installing AMD heat sinks a little while ago...worth checking out!

I've built several nforce2/barton25+ systems for my family and other people. Using a wide range of mobos from Epox, Shuttle, Abit, and DFI. Of those four, the Abit NF7-S reports the highest temps using motherboard monitor 5x. DFI the lowest, and the Epox and Shuttle mobos falling in between. That's with the Barton25 running @ 2.2 Ghz or higher in every case.
The Shuttle boxes generally have had temps of 29C system/37C cpu idle and 30C/ 44-47C cpu under load. You may want to redo your thermal paste and heatsink mount. Also, case fans/airflow play an important part when OCing, as I'm sure you know. 2200-2500rpm case fans don't cut it, IMHO, when in an OCed setting. 2800-3K rpms make a big difference and to me anyway, aren't that much louder.

Not for nuthin' but I use Thermalright's SLK700 w/ 70mm YS Tech TMD fans on all the Barton 25's I've built for people. Great for moderate OCing, relatively quiet, visually appealing and best of all. cheap.
The fan and hs can be had from KD computers in a combo deal for $24. Check it.

No offense, but those stock coolers just don't cut the mustard.
