No Sound

Post by dokkktor »

I had this happen before but I can't remember how to fix it. I do recall it was something simple (?)

I am using Windows XP Pro.
I had a corrupted C:\windows\system32\config\system file
I used Recovery Console to fix it.
(The last time it was a virus and had to format the HD)
I had to re-install my drivers (Video, Sound Card, Monitor, Printer, etc...)
Now it looks like there should be sound but nothing is coming out.
It acts like there is sound playing - No errors.
All connections are intact - They were re-checked.

There are no restore points. - It was turned off to clean the virus?

I went through the Windows trouble-shooting guide and nothing worked.
Device is enabled, No conflicts, System volume is not muted.

Any ideas?

Like I say it happened a month or so ago but I can't remember how I fixed it - I tried for 3 days and can't remember what I did that worked. But I do know it isn't a hardware problem. Might be Bios, or drivers, or settings.

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks

Go to Windows Control Panel, Sounds & Audio Devices, "Audio" tab.

Make sure that your sound device is selected as the default device for playback and recording.

Sometimes Windows will grab the wrong sound device - usually your modem (most modems have a sound card in them for voice mail).

That may be why it seems to be working, and playing back, but you don't hear anything. It's playing the sounds on your modem not your sound card.

Also check the simple things:
- Make sure the WAVE or MASTER channel on the sound mixer is not muted or turned down.
- You sure the speakers are working? Try headphones.

How did you recover the Windows install? Did you actually use the Recovery console to restore the boot sectors or did you run a Repair install?

As bad as the drive corruption that occured from your description I would do a Repair install. This completely re-installs Windows (you don't lose andy apps or setting), and wipes the device manager. Sounds like you may have done this since you mentioned you had to re-install all drivers, but if so that's not a Recovery Console that's a Repair install.

Keep in mind that if you did do a repair install you also need to re-install Service Pack 1 (if SP1 wasn't included on your WinXP CD), and ALL the security updates (repair install resets Windows back to the original fresh install condition and all updates are gone).

Hope this helps.
