transplant a computer?

Post by jtn3833 »

I love my VAIO (PCV-RS720G) but I'd prefer it in a new box, one with a few more open drive bays and a side fan. Would it be as easy as it seems to just unplug everything and slide it all into a new box? What problems might I run into? I've built frankenputers out of several old systems before so transplanting one doesn't seem like a challenge but this is my main computer and I don't want any surprises.

Thanks,
JTN

Cheap cases can turn an A+ PC into a crashing phantom restarting nighmare. Due to mobo spreaders/offset not sitting even and causeing grounding issues. Otherwise its no different then building a brand new system. Just take care of dust getting into the contacts due to it not being a new PC(give it a thorough clean "DustOFF" off) If this becomes an issue it might take awhile to find and clean. Mark the primary drive if you have more then one IDE HDD(spall chance of playing russian route if you use mas/slv jumpers)

I wouldn't recommend it. OEM systems don't generally have standard motherboards. Mounting holes will likely be in the wrong place. Front panel USB connectors will probably wired differently. I can't tell you how many people do what you're thinking about over at Anand's and then fry their USB devices, or entire system when they plug a USB device into a front jack and realize it.s cross-wired.

No guarantee even that the Sony has a standard ATX powersupply and that it'll fit the mounting holes in a standard ATX case.

You want a custom computer, sell the Sony and build a custom system, otherwise you're likely in for a lot of pain.

If you don't want any suprises, leave it be.
