Help Needed with Power Supply
Help Needed with Power Supply
I bought this new power supply but it wont fit in my old Antec Case. I know my Antec Case came with like a retention kit for Power Supply. If you power supply was smaller, you hooked it up to the retention kit, and voilla you can fit it in the case so that you can screw the power supply from the back.
Right now scenario is that the power supply screw holes on the back wont match with the holes on the case.
Anybody know what I am talking about and point me to a product they think works?? I have seen noise dampners but I doubt they'll work in this case
I have this power supply I just bought from newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817171007
Thanks for any info

The PSU mounting holes in the back of ATX cases iare standardized. The only time you see a difference is if you have a special case - like a Media PC case, with a special size PSU. I'm with Jim and wonder if you haven't got it upside down.
If it's an Antec case it should take a standard ATX PSU since all Antec PSUs are standard.
Some premium PSUs may not fit the fan and plug cutouts on the back of the case - that's because some of the premium PSUs have extra switches and jacks on the back, but the screws should still line up and a sheet metal nibbling tool will allow you to remove the obstructing sheet metal from the back of the case.
BTW: That is a cheap (quality) PSU. Not something I'd install in a modern system. It doesn't look like it has two fans on it, and a single fan unit is unacceptable for anything made in the last 3 years.
It also doesn't appear to be dual-rail and I definately wouldn't put a single rail PSU in a modern gaming system (if you have a Radeon 9800 class video card or better you NEED dual rail).
Unless this is for a budget grandma system, I'd be leery of using it (and I personally wouldn't put that PSU in my grandma's system). Realistically you have to spend more than $50 to get a good PSU. I'd recommend an Antec PSU or the Enermax Noisetaker.
A cheap PSU will come back to haunt you later with mysterious lockups and crashes that will probably be rare enough to annoy, but hard to pin down as the PSU's fault.

Well, I'm not vouching for the PSU, but I have two "Antec" clone cases made by Cheiftec (SP?) and they have the plate he is talking about. But I think that the plate is used by defualt for standard PSUs and is removed for Server or larger PSUs maybe? I know that I can take the plate out if I like, but have never had a need to..

I know its a cheaper one but its a really heavy PSU. Beside that, its going to be powering a Athlon 1600+ with a Voodoo 3 video card. Not a gaming computer at all.
Even my Antec 550 PSU wont fit on the case bec the thing is missing on the case. Can't tell you what Antec model the case is, but its from 2000 if that tells you guys anything.
Hey eGo, do you have a spare plate on ya?? I would pay for it. Sorry for late replies, but have been really busy with work lately.

ok I tried putting in 3 different power supplies in that case and none of them would fit, I am sure there was a kit that you would attach to the power supply and hook it up with the case. It looked kind of like this

Also tried it hooking upside down and different position ... no luck
any ideas??

It would probably be fairly easy to just pick up a piece of plexi glass and cut it with a dremel to meet your needs.. Just a thought.
FP, I believe that for some reason, the hole that is there is very large, about 25% larger than a normal ATX hole. And that there would have been an adapter plate that you screwed in and then screwed the ATX PSU into the adapter plate. When I get home I'll take a picture of the one I have to see if it's the same deal.

I don't FRIGGING believe this, but I HAVE ONE! A client's old PC failed - bad mobo I think - and I helped him buy a new Dell. He gave me his old system for parts. Been sitting on my bench for 2 weeks - no time to play with it.
It's a TALL old Antec case. So on a whim I just took a look at the back and it has the adapter plate with a standard 300w Antec ATX PSU attached. Check picture below to confirm (looks just like Ego's photo to me).
Be happy to mail you the plate FMZ - I don't need the case. Going to scrap it. Email me your mailing address.
I can't get it in the mail until Tuesday at the earliest though since I'll be out of town for the weekend for a LAN party.
Anything else you need out of this case, like rails?
