Post by SithSolo1 »

Ok, today i swithced out my bothers DVD-rom with a cd-rom form my system. Windows didn't detect it so i tried add new hardware(heres where it goes to hell in a hand basket) well it appered in the list of new hardware so i clicked finish, the little bar on the installation screen is filling up quite nicely than BAM! Please Insert Winblows 98 CD. WTF!?!?! OK, For reason unbeknowst the the computer thats imposible so I clicked cancel. Please press ok to restart you computer now. I click ok and while its restarting I check the BIOS, and what do you know it sees no CD-Rom so iexit an let it restart. ............................................. We finally get back to windows and the first thing i see is a popup saying the display adapter is mis configured. So i click ok and it says some stuff about the adapter not working properly and it say click ok to restart so I d....................Done restarting. I have the drivers for the vidcard stored in a folder so I go to install them and it says it can't find the display adapter. Me and my dumbass self then go to add new hardware again, so winblows checks for hardware right. What do you know everycard on my mobo plus some other stuff is listed there now. S i click finish again and again I go through the plz insert winblows but I still have no CD-rom so it dosn't work ; AGAIN!

anyway, i take the cd-rom out an replace it with another one, this time the bios sees it but not windows.

What I want to know is
1) How bad di I fux0r it up?
2) How do I make windows detect the CD-Rom with out using the windows 98 cd?
3) How can i make it so the entire Windows98 cd i on my HD at all times?
4) Why did this happen?

Thx for the help

Well, make sure the jumper is in the correct position on the back of the drive.
Make a directory in the C:\Windows directory and label it cabs then copy all the cab files from the win98 directory on the CD to C:\Windows\Cabs directory. When ever an install asks for the Win98 CD, just type in the location. :)

Plug and play should be on. Have you tried the drive in a different comp ? (after trying in the current one) What IDE port do you have it connected too ?

Yes, the cd-rom that is in the system now works. THe first one i tried doesn't. It the secondary master.

I'll check the ICQ when I get back to my dorm. I'm at home right now, but the dorm is only 15mins away
