Question about IDE Connectors....

Post by Sean »

I am assuming you can sonnect more IDE devices than the motherboard has connectors for. Lots of motherboards I have looked at have 2-4 IDE connectors. How would I got about adding 2-3 hard drives, DVD ROM Drive, and a CD Rewritable drive to a motherboard with 2-4 connectors?

Thanks...

PS: Could someone explain how these connectors work, maybe?

you should have a primary and a secondary IDE slot. Each slot can have a master and slave device. This limits you to 4 devices. You can buy another IDE controller card, or (what I would do) buy you an IDE raid card and connect your hard drives to that.

Is this a good motherboard? I will be using it with a Athlon 1.2-1.4 GHZ and may over clock the 1.4 if possible...

I have yet to use AMD but I know others have used that mobo and seem very pleased with it. Plus since it has an onboard raid controller that means you can have up to 8 ide devices. That mobo has onboard sound too that I hear is pretty good for most things.

Thanks, I think I will go with one of these 3:

ABIT KG7-RAID
http://www.abit-usa.com/eng/product/mb/kg7.htm

MSI K7T266 Pro - Raid
http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/doc/A13161.html

Gigabyte GA-7DXR
http://www.giga-byte.com/products/7dxr.htm

Now to find the other parts I want.. :)

All 3 look good to me but I'd post asking which is best in the AMD forum here and get others opinions. One thing I noticed is the abit has a high point on board raid controller while the other 2 have a promise raid controller. I'm not sure which is best. And the abit has 6 pca slots while the others have 5.

But multiwave is one great company and another is newegg.com. Have fun. Sounds like Christmas for ya. :)

I got the Epox 8K7A ddr mobo and its pretty fast and stable. I can reccomend that. And the 8K7A+ has a raid controller on it.

Thanks for the input, but I think I may go with the Gigabyte motherboard, which is my favorite out of all of them.

I found a pretty good heatsink/fan that keeps cool up to 1.5 GHz, what do you think?

Thermaltake MINI COPPER ORB Heatsink + Ball bearing Fan Pure Copper base & contact face, for AMD socket A / 462, up to 1.5GHz. DU0462-9 (* According to Manufacturer, This fan is designed for AMD Socket A and supports up to 1.5 GHz *)
