Help finding good hard drive... (7200 RPM or higher - 18 GB or larger)

I want a fast and somewhat big hard drive for my future computer. Faster than 9 ms seek time would be great.
One question I do have, can I only have up to 7200 RPM with IDE devices? Or do I ned SCSI?
Any suggestions?

i believe the new ibm 60gxp series is pretty fast for ide drives. if you want realy low seek times you pretty much have to go with scsi. personlly i think scsi is the way to go. i know some will argue that point but to each his own. i will never go back to an all ide based system. once you feel the speed of a 10 or 15,000 rpm scsi drive, you'll be hooked. if you have the extra cash to spend i recommend a scsi drive anyday, if you want to conserve some cash i would go with ibm i mentioned above. it all depends on how fast you want to go and how much your willing to spend to spend to get that speed. shop around the fs/ft forum. on just about any day you will find a bargain on decent scsi drive or ide for that matter. but hanging out there is another addiction all together

I'd go with either the IBM 60GXP series or the new Western Digital Caviar drives
Caviar drives. I have the WD800BB, the 80 GB version of the Caviar series, and I'm enjoying it

I currently have an IBM 75GXP 75 Gig and like it.
But I hear the 60GXPs are a bit faster

I'm pretty hooked to the motherboard I have chosen. Isn't it possible to get a SCSI controller to add to the computer later on...? After it has already been built.

yeah you can get the adaptec 2930u. Real good scsi controller. $75 on pricewatch.

Definately is Sean. But if u go into it knowing u want SCSI and buy IDE. Then ur just wasting money on IDE when u should have saved for SCSI

I have sold a bunch of those 80G WD 7200 ide drives and people seem to like them.
Yes you can always add a scsi card. and a 2930 ant gana cut it. you will need something higher end then that for a modern HD. Remember scsi is EXPENSIVE and HOT...but FAST. another option might be ide raid...You can get say 2 ibm 60Gxp 40 gigers raid them to a 80 giger. that is a Nice option...Just an idea.

Hehe, SCSI is really the thing to blow you money away ... but it's awesome once you've seen it in action ... ultimate would be a Tekram U3W controller with the Seagate Cheetah X15-36LP , SCSI performance including IDE-RAID-0 speed in a single drive ... get a fast SCSI drive for OS/newest games and IDE/IDE-RAID for your mass storage needs.
Welp, that would be the ideal solution. SCSI gonna cost you an arm and a leg ... but few who switched did regret it.

I'm tempted by the X15-36LP .... yeah .... but I can't afford it right now .... and my X15 will keep me happy while I wait.

Right now I have a motherboard with IDE, which has Raid 0,1, or 1&2. I might just stick with IDE for now. It will suit me for sure. Right now I have a 12 GB 5400, which is 4 years old. It has suited me fine. I think I will go with the IBM 60 GXP, or a fast Maxtor hard drive.
