Windows XP and SMC7004ABR Router

I am planning on hooking up a second computer with my cable connect. I have the chance to pick up - http://www.smc.com/smc/common/prodPrevi ... SMC7004ABR - that router for close to nothing.

Has anyone successfully got this router working in Windows XP? I don't have XP now, but I plan on getting it in October. I assume by then most if not all hardware should work with XP, but I would rather play it safe than sorry. ;)

Seeing as how it is a router, and not internal hardware, you shouldn't be worried about any OS compatability issues.

It looks to me like it gets an IP from your provider, then routes traffic. It most likely will run a DHCP server, so computers connected to it can ask it for an IP address. DHCP is a widely used standard, so just about ANY piece of networkable hardware should be able to run behind that router with no problems.

i have the SMC router now. i've actually had it for a few weeks now and i finally got to test it oiut w/ a wireless NIC. seems to work well for me. i'm running w2k pro and w2k server on my systems.

it won't matter what operating system you use, at least not windows-wise. it's pretty easy to setup and get going. i'll hopefully have a review for it up here on the board in a couple of weeks.

OS won't make any difference with a stand alone router.

I happen to prefer the SMC Barricade to most of the others. Nice admin control panel, easy setup, very reliable.

Check their website for the latest BIOS update though.

Thanks,

Yeah I found a ton of comments on it in the SMC board on dslreports.com. It seems the earlier BIOS's had a lot of problems but most are fixed now.
