I got a used Sound Blaster Live! Value as a "bonus" when I bought my Altec speakers off eGay. I had just got around to installing it and forgot to check the ribbon cable running from the card to the expansion card. It turns out I had one of them backwards. BIG Mistake. I had the cover off my case and when I looked back down after powering on smoke was billowing out of it! I shut it off quickly and turned on my fan to get the burning plastic smell out. After it cooled and the smoke cleared I checked for burn spots. It had burned the side wire. Heres some pics to show what I mean. I recommend any of you who own this card make sure you have it on right.

That happened to me once on an OLDER socket 7 mobo(AT style).. I hooked up the USB card to the mobo and the lil data cable that hooked between the two did the exact same thing. quite fun. I also did that once where the yellow wire on the power cable going to the floppy drive melted and smoked. that was fun!

Bummer man, that really sucks. Reminds me of the time I burned out a floppy header on a comp I was working on at the office. Installed a new HDD, hit the power, turned to get a tool, and turned back around to a smoking floppy cable. Really freaked me out for a sec.
Totally know how you feel man.
