Modem drivers help needed

The new lappy came with WinXP. What a joke. It hangs all the time when you exit programs and takes forever to install any drivers. So I did a Format C: and installed Win98SE, I got everything to work except the Conexan-Ambit soft 56k modem. I can't find drivers for it. I tried generic drivers with no luck. Does anyone have a Sony Vaio with this modem and Win98/ME ? Honestly I do feel that WinXP sucks. It is way over bloated for simple computer usage. 98SE is running much faster and it doesn't hang like XP does.

I've had a lot of luck finding drivers here: http://www.driverguide.com/

BSOD as soon as it tries to dial out. :( I know there has to be a driver out there somewhere. I tried from the sites you two posted, all give a BSOD.

I'm running XP on an IBM ThinkPad 600E with no problems. It's a PII400, 128 MB ram, 10.0GB HD, 13.3 XGA TFT, 24X internal CD-ROM, internal 56K modem.

Do a clean install of XP... If its running like that something is seriously wrong with the install...

It being a new laptop, you should call their tech support as they might be able to send you a recovery disc with a different OS, like Win2K, 98 or ME. Their site should also list drivers for all their laptop devices.
You could also try running their XP recovery disc to see if maybe that cures the initial problem as it should run perfectly when new, if not I'd call their tech support about that too as maybe they know of a cure.

My laptop came with ME and although I've read many bad things about ME here, I've had no complaints with it, seems fine. They're suppose to send me an XP upgrade disc when they have one loaded with their drivers, etc but I'm not sure if I'll install XP on it or not. I think if I do anything, I'd run Win2K on it instead.

All new computers now come with WinXP, you might get lucky and find one with WinME. Win98 is no longer installed on them. I might have to contact Sony for drivers. I still think WinXP is an over-bloated Win2K. I ran the 3 recovery CD's again. Strange that Sony partitioned the drive into a 6 gig primary and 9gig secondary. The 6gig partition is Fat32 and the 9gig was NTFS. That makes no sense to me. Now both are Fat32. After the recovery was done and the lappy was booted into XP, I plugged in a USB Optical mouse and it took between 5 and 10 minutes for XP to install it. It took about 2 minutes on the WinME lappy to install. So I am off to the Sony site for help. :)
