Am I missing something here??? I thought networking to computers with a crossover cable would be as simple as doing it with a hub... But for the life of my I can't get the 2 computers to reconize each other....
Here's the setup... Win2k and win98SE machines. Network cards are configured so each has a static IP in the same range (also tried dynamic) and are on the same workgroup. Even tried installing netBEUI and IPX... Played with most of the options too but nothing seems to work...
No matter what I do they refuse to see each other. I can't even ping the other machines... Any fancy ideas about why my crossover network doesn't want to work???
Problem with crossover network...

Assuming the crossover cable is good (did you make it yourself? It's possible to get a link light and still have a bad cable), then yes setting up the network is otherwise exactly the same as using a hub or a switch.
Are both your NIC cards the same speed? You can't mix 10 and 100 cards on a crossover.
If you plan on using File & Printer Sharing, I would definately install NetBeui. I wouldn't even bother with TCP/IP unless you're sharing Internet or need it for playing LAN games. If you do install TCP/IP, don't share the printer and files across it - NetBeui is much more efficient for that.
I explain how to setup a network in detail here: http://soldcentralfl.com/quakecoop/network.htm
These instructions are for Win98. Win2K can be a bit trickier, although the same basic settings apply.
Hope this helps...

Christians warn us about the anti-christ for 2,000 years, and when he shows up, they buy a bible from him.
the nic _might_ be the problem.. ones a 10, the others a 10/100... The crossover appears to be good. I bought it at a store and the correct wires are crossed over... i didn't check other other 4 wires though, maybe they got screwed up... yup, subnet mask is the correct setting.
This will be for gaming so tcpip i kinda needed...
