I recently did a "rebuild"......(rebuild = add an scsi card, 2 scsi drive, and transplant into a new case(Chenming with dual fans in window, modded with a 120mm blowhole in top))
In doing so I reseated the heatsink on my cpu and video card (used artic alumina, wanted artic silver II but store did not have). I decided to buy a new heatsink seeing as how I was ripping the old one off anyways! I picked up a Tt Dragon 478 (for an Intel P4 1.8 gig) after installing this monster, I tried to boot the system and got a message saying my cpu was not functioning. After letting it sit, I started it up, it worked fine, after installing more software, I had to restart. I got the same message (it was as if the heatsink was not doin' its job) The fan was spinning (believe me you would know as this is one LOUD heatsink) I wound up having to, go back to the Intel one and return it.
If anything I just wanted to let everyone know about the problem I had incase you run into the same.

were you urunning the new heatsink off the mobo header or off one of the connectors from the power source? those puppies take a lot of juice and if you had a `300w power source you might not have been getting enough juice to boot

I one built a system for a friend where similar things were happening and it turned out that the fan on the heatsink was putting out a funky tach signal that made the mainboard freak out.

If you still had the heatsink you could try powering it up with the tach wire disconnected or as wvjohn suggested, it could have been that the fan was sucking too much juice.

That dragon heatsink just has the looks, but not the performance. From what I've seen the stock intel one cools better than the dragon.

Yeah it is cool looking but..........
I have a 400w power source, i was running it directly off the mobo (hmmm coulda been the problem!, lol)
