swapped switch won't switch

have a 24 port 3com swicth at work - nt 4.0 server/win98 pcs. ips are assigned by a cable modem router hooked to the switch ( i believe)
bearings go bad in the fans in the switch, make snow cone machine noises
3com sends a replacement switch, identical model
tried to install new switch - identical cabling - intermittent network connectivity - no internet
got tired of fooling with it and swapped back in the old one and it worked fine -
i must be missing something here but not sure what
TIA

Was the old switch manageble? Were there any management settings in the old switch that the new one would need? Sounds like you have some routing issues with the new switch.

Agreed, unless it's a manageable switch then there's no reason it shouldn't work. A straight switch doesn't require anything special.
Can the fans be easily replaced in the old one?

the short answer is I don't know if the old switch was managed or not, but that seems like the problem here - i didn't have time to really look into it today because of other work out of the office - the fan replacement would probably not be a biggie - the problem there is 3com - if you send it in for repair, they don't send you a loaner - and they said it could be 10 days to get it back - the only other option was to get a new one - and pay $300 - and send the old one back - which was the option we took because we obviously can't do without for 10-14 days - btw - it took them ~10 days to get the new part here as well - i came in and tried to get it going on the weekend b/c it must be on while we're open
when hp stuff fails around here i get the parts overnite from hp and send the bad ones back, whic is the way it 'sposed to be !
i have a list of miscellaneous settings here somewhere that our IT/Network who we fired for never showing up left me at some point, i'll see if i can make any sense out of that
thanks, i'll report back as i learn more

The only 3Com switches that are manageable are the Superstack series. The rest like Office Connect and Soho series aren't. Check to see the MDIX button is not set. Other than that I can't think of any reason why a simple swap wouldn't work.
