Synchronous and Asynchronous

As I understand it (I think I understand it) that if a computer is in synchronous mode ( the memory speed and FSB speed are the same) then the cpu will opperate at a faster rate compared to Asyncronous mode ( where the memory is a higher speed 166 to the FSB at 133) because of wait cycles for one to catch up with the other. If this is correct , then does it make enough difference in speed to have your memory running at 166 or would just staying at 133 be a better match for the cpu.
