I am thinking about getting a DVD burner . How easy is it to backup your DVDs ? I have a 9 year old daughter that doesn't realize how easy it is to scratch them . Which DVD burners you recommend ? What with the different media , DVD-R , DVD+R , DVDRW-R DVDRW+R ? What's the difference between the - and the + ?

well I dont know about the different burners themselves.... or about how to copy the dvds

I would have to definetly give the thumbs up to the Pioneer A05. I have this burner and it is superb. Plus with the 4X media, a new DVD in 15 minutes is pretty sweet. I used to own the Pioneer A04, and it too was awesome, but a tad on the slow side

Difference between + and - is compatibility - two different standards. I got a Sony drive that supports both to play safe.

DVD- is the more compatible standard. It's the one being pushed by the video industry and any tabletop DVD player can play it. DVD+ is being pushed by the computer industry and older DVD table top players can't play them (although some can play +RW and not +R, my 3 year old Sony being one of them).

To you it effectively makes no difference, but if you want to send a DVD to someone and make sure he can play it, use DVD-

If you're thinking of copying commercial movie DVDs, that can be problematic. You're not supposed to be able to. With the right software you can, but newer DBDs are harder to copy. If the only reason you're getting a DVD burner is to copy commercial movie DVDs you'd better do some research first or you'll wind up making a lot of coasters.

Prices for drives and blanks are mirroring the pricing of CDR drives and blanks from 3 years ago.
Right now, drives are running betw $150-300 and blanks are betw $1-2.

I wouldn't worry too much about + or - unless you're primary objective is backing up dvd-movies. Then you'll want to check dvdrhelp.com for your particular player's compatibility.

I have an HP 300i DVD+R burner. Works great with data and single layer dvd movies (dvdxcopy). No complaints, and the movie copies play on all of my set tops. I'm still trying to get a hold of dvdxcopy express to see how the compression looks for dual layer dvds.

Eventually, drives will be $40 after rebate, and 50-pack spindles will be free after rebate.
