Anyone else download it. It came up when I did a OS update, so I figured what the hell. I still can't find any release notes though!

Got it earlier when I did a windows update. Can't tell any difference, but then I really haven't done anything to test it.

I grabbed it. Installed it, no problems and dont see anything different. Maybe I should get around to running 3dMark or something but have played some games and it all seems the same.

I don't have it on this rig yet.
I just upgraded the family box and when I went to install the latest catalyst driver for an 8500, it woudn't let me load them unless I installed dx9 ! weird. So I stuck it on there.
Very early in the setup tho for that box so I can't tell ya if it's problematic with anything.

Only major change is a security fix. Believe it or not all prior versions of DX had an exploit that would allow someone to load malicious code via a MIDI file (of all things) using a buffer overflow.
Man, if you can exploit a buffer overflow by loading a f@cking MIDI file, someone at MS is writing some crappy code...

i was curious, i have a 64 meg leadtek Geforce 4 ti 4200 vid card, im using directX 8.1a or whatever hte latest one is... would i gain or lose anything by upgrading to directx 9????

Probably not. My general rule has always been not to bother installing a new DirectX unless a game you install requires it (and in that case the game will install it automatically).
We're way beyond the point where a DX upgrade noticeably improves performance.
On the other hand, DX9 is totally stable so feel free to install it if you like.

If all the previous version other than the newest 9b or whatever it is have the security flaw wouldn't it be wise for everyone to update to the newest version? Even if there is no performance gains I would think the added security would make it worth while.

You can apply a patch to fix the security issue without upgrading.
