I'm in the process of putting together a new machine at the moment. I have a really nice L shaped desk and like to spread my legs out so I decided that I was going to try a small form factor machine, like a Shuttle or something. Those however tend to be not very expandable with only 1 or 2 PCI slots and sometimes not even an AGP slot, and are sometimes quite expensive. So then I was thinking that maybe a "desktop" case would work. Something I could put under my monitor. The problem is that I'm having a hard time finding people that sell them. I definitly like the idea of raising my monitor up a little higher, so long as the case can hold the 35lbs. Does anyone know a good retailor online that sells desktop cases? Towers are becomming so popular thats almost all I can find.

If you're willing to do a little work, you might try goodwill - there are a lot of older 133mhz compaqs and such to be found at these places - just remove the insides and you have a case you can stand on for $5

The problem with that is a lot of those desktop-form Compaqs are LPX form factor. You're not going to find any modern motherboard to fit in there.

Cryo, if you can find one of these cases, then consider it. They're smaller and slimmer than most desktop cases, but they still take ATX boards and full-height cards. Only issue is that it only takes SFX style power supplies, and I've only seen those up to 230 watts.

Yeah I had tried looking at an old IBM Netvista machine that was broken at work but the motherboard pins are not ATX form factor and modding the case to fit an ATX looked like it would be a pain

good point. The Compucase ("Directron 7106") is a decent case for the price. They have a large fore-aft brace which'll help support your monitor, and they're quite roomy... believe it or not I once stuffed a dual-CPU 440GX board in one of these.
