Just installed WinXP Pro on a buds PC and for some reason it takes about 5 min to load windows...
it just sits at the WinXP logo screen and the bar keeps moving across over and over...
for an actual 5 min...
hard drive loads win98 in 45 secs or so... any setting I should check for in the bios?? I'll post system specs when I find them out but for now I think it's a Celeron 1.7 ghz 256 megs of DDR...
I'll find out the mobo soon
any ideas though?
thx!

Start with installing the latest chipset drivers, then, failing that, check to see if you have a manual DNS server specified in the TCP/IP properties for your NIC. Windows XP Pro may be attempting to register with a non-existent DNS server. If all else fails, un-install and re-install everything NIC related.
nope... didn't work...
tried Bootvis and it gave me an error about an entry point... ? I dunno what that means..
anyone have any other ideas?
Clean install of Win XP pro... and a 5 min startup time...
but the comp runs fine when it's finally booted and it only hangs one the WinXP load screen
ideas???

Demrok, clean install? No security patches? Are you behind a router or firewall? If not, you may have become infected with the Sasser virus. Like MSBlaster it just comes in on an open port unless you install the security update, or block the port.
It'll slow down your system a lot and give you funny errors.

Comp has NOT been hooked up to the net, its just a standalone PCDemrok, clean install? No security patches? Are you behind a router or firewall? if it is hanging at the boot screen...its because it is trying to boot a device that has something wrong with it. Double check you got your motherboard drivers all correctly installed. If you have onboard raid, make sure you have it disabled or the correct drivers installed. Try updating the chipset drivers. Try pulling the soundcard as well
Gone for good. But never say never
