With all the new desktop technology arriving, what's your upgrade roadmap for the next year or so?

Take into consideration that PCI Express, DDR2, and 64 bit OS's will all come into play etc. Not to mention the vid card product cycles.

Just curious as to what PCA people are up to.

probably wait until next year some time for the next major upgrade - my xp systems are faster than i need already

I am with wvjohn on this one. Just like most I like having the new technology but my current system is more computer than I really need so I am in no hurry and will wait till prices are more reasonable.

a few P4 3.0+

I'm not buying a 64-bit CPU for a while..theres no point, really. I'm just gonna try to max out my P4 overclock and maybe hit the magic 4.0 I might upgrade my mobo sooner rather than later, but I really don't feel like buying new RAM.

I tend to buy bottom-end hardware because I never seem to have the cash for top of the line stuff. I'll run my xp2500 as long as it'll go, and my radeon 9000 is still okay for me. As far as 64bit goes, I can't see myself changing hardware setups to accomodate it unless something happens (breaks) and I'm doing a major rebuild anyways.

Still love to hear about the top of the line rigs though. It's like looking at nice cars, even though you know you'll never be able to buy 'em

Damn straight!!! Well said. I buy inexpensive things, and just constantly upgrade with a little here and there.

Depends. Right now, I don't do much more than surf the internet with my PC. If some of the new games (Doom III or HL2) get me into the gaming mood again I might invest in some upgrades.

Right now I look at the price of a new system and think "For a few dollars more, I could put that 95" big bore kit on my Hog."

I was planning on a huge upgrade for DDR2, PCI-X, and a new processor but that would just cost too much. I just built my system this March and I plan on keeping it. If anything were to change, it would be the case (to a v2000B).

I'll be going dual opteron next year.

ill be keeping my rig as is unless something breaks "knock on wood" and i have to upgrade it. meanwhile ill be watching the the athlon 64 prices hopefully come down to where i can afford them. i bet a 64 platform would really chew though win 98 lol.

I took the easy route and upgraded my Epox 8RDA+ w/AMD 2400+ to an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe w/AMD 3200+ Barton.

Nice performance improvement, simple upgrade. Since both are NForce2 mobos I didn't even have to do a repair install or re-install drivers. Swapped mobos and BAM up and running (if you're curious why I didn't just put the 3200 on the 8RDA+ it's because it's a revision 1 and doesn't support it). The old mobo and CPU are going to get moved into the LAN party rig.


I don't think we'll all be rushing to run WinXP 64 bit right away.

I get the feeling that 64-bit, although it will be hyped, is really going to be a non-issue until next year. There are a couple of games that will come out with 64-bit versions available. I know there's a FarCry 64-bit version floating around but I don't think it's final.

For the desktop user 64-bit is meaningless unless you're using high-end apps.

No one needs to address as much ram as a 64-bit CPU can - 2Gb is all anyone really needs - even for the newest games coming out.

I also have to wonder what kind of problems we'll have running older apps in 64-bit Windows until they work the bugs out. I assume older utilities like Norton won't work without 64-bit versions? Not sure.

Going to sit and wait until they sort it all out. After Xmas I'll start thinking 64bit if it seems to be making a big difference.

Tell me you didn't blow $187 for a 32 bit AMD desktop[ Barton 3200+ ! You could have bought a mobile XP 2400+ with a Barton core for $77, set the multi to 11x and just turned the FSB up to 200MHz, set the voltage to 1.6v ( lower than a desktop 3200+ ) and saved yourself a $110.
