we always talk about desktops here...i know there are some server guys on here too. what is the standard equipment you deal with? what is the most powerful server setup you've seen in person?

my company doesn't have anything super...just mid-level HP/Compaq servers...1U DL360 G3/4's, etc. biggest array is 1TB.

i've never seen a monster setup, really...

We have an Apple X-Serve at the office with something like 500Gb of storage. I avoid that as much as possible simply b/c I don't want my boss to think that I like it

Our workhorse is a dual MP 1600+, 1Gb RAM, 15k RPM U3W SCSI storage. Hosts our web site, databases, etc. We have two other smaller servers that do email and FTP.

nice. i forgot apple made servers. hehe

speaking of that...there was a good article by banandtech regarding his use of a mac for a month...it was a good read and mostly positive regarding the OS X based rig.

But I have a File Server setup running Dual Athlon XP 1700+ modded to MPs with 768MB of RAM and about 240GB of storage.

Lets see... what i have here... a dual 350 celly thats basicly just a print server that does nothing but fold. A dual P3 550 that has a rocket raid card and 4 160G running it RAID 5 for 447 gigs of space. then a Dell Poweredge 4350 with dual 650 and 2 gig of ram. It does my BT and DC for me. It has 17 gigs of space on 3 scsi drives that are alos raided 5.

Other then that at work we have a Octo processor comcrap. Its got 550's in it and like 4 gig of ram. does excell and E2 stuff. Its like 16U and has like 25 drives in it.

best one I ever saw was circa 1982 - taking my first puter course - nite school at some gov agency in dc - as a treat they took us into the back in the cold room where they had two ! 40 mb hard drives.......back then, that was liking seeing the space shuttle...hehe

I work on two servers at work- the main workhorse is a compaq ml570 with dual xeon 2.0 cpus
and a raid 5 array- total storage is only 300 gigs

Second is a citrix server running a single p4 3.2 .

Really its the 20 or so workstations and 11 laptops which are the pains in the asses, the server rarely gives me greif

WTF does a game server need a 5900 for? Or a tv card. Some of my servers dont even have a video card in them. And the ones that do all have POS 2 meg cards. Serriously all i have hooked up to them is power and network.
