So its just a tiny monitor being fed by the PC and a program running in the background that displays info on the display? So like adding a second monitor with stats on it?

Yup. Interesting thing is that 5 and 7 inch HDMI displays powered by USB are cheap and easily attainable, mainly due to the Raspberry Pi craze. Even touch screens. They're all over Amazon.

That would be dandy for a few projects I can think of.

Pinball machines use them too in some locations.
