Samsung Magician not detecting external SSD

I have a 2.5 Samsung 850 EVO and I'd like to check the firmware before I use it. I have the latest SM installed, version 7.3 if memory serves me, but using a USB3 connector even with a power adapter, it's detected but I can't do anything with it. What can I purchase that would make SM work externally?

Samsung's software won't detect external dives. You'll have to remove it from the enclosure in order to check and update the firmware.

Yeah I figured that out. Bummer that I can't do it connected to a USB just to check/update the firmware. What about using an e-sata port?

I've even had trouble detecting through my motherboard with a built in raid controller. Had to use a standard port.
