I recently got a Logitech Mouseman Wheel Optical. I can scroll with the scroll wheel just fine, and the left and right buttons work okay, but I can't use the wheel as a button, and the thumb button doesn't work either. Basically, they aren't recognized. What can be done for this? With my last Logitech, the mouse wheel worked fine as a button, but I didn't have the Logitech software installed then. Should I uninstall it for it to work right? Thanks for any help :)

When you say 'not recognized'. You mean that when setting a function in a game? Because some games don't support the mousewheel button.

If the software doesn't support it, that's surprising. Have you tried to configure the buttons (in the Logitech software) to a button? And then use that button for the game setting?

There used to be a glitch in the Intellipoint software that had this similar problem. The workaround was to assign the mouse wheel button to a function key like 'pgdn' and then use that when setting the desired game function. With the 3.1 Intellipoint drivers, now the mouse wheel button is recognized in games.

I took away the drivers, now the games work fine with the buttons.

in UT i use the thumb button of my mouseman to switch weapons, my friend has a mouse with scroll wheels but i find that in the heat of battle you tend to overshoot your selected weapon and get toasted :)

If you map the thumb button to a keyboard key using the Intellipoint software and then map the key in the game to the function you want you should be good to go. This is an especially good trick for games that do not natively support the extra button.

For example - in Q3, make something like F1 = backup and then in the intellipoint software, make the thumb button = F1. Keep in mind though that I think the naytive "back" in IE5 will probably bring up help now - i.e. F1

or you could just install the proper drivers, and then download this reg patch from the Logitech site:

hope this helps, lmk
