Secret Storage amd saftey case

Post by canton_kid »

I need a place to HIDE very private files, a place I can access easily, but the average person would not
Think to look!

Reason being, I will have some not yet copyrighted program files, and some designs not yet patended. I don't want these found by anyone snooping around.

I plan to store the files on Cd's. CD-r and Cd-rw. Since these Cd's are written to by heat, laser light, magnetism should not hurt them I am thinking.

So do you think it would do any harm to store them next to a large speaker magnet? I will most likely use this speaker at times, or at least have it hooked up to be used and other people may use it.
If not useable, kinda obvious it's not for music! Kinda like sitting a Refrigerator in the mddle of a room without a cord on it. If it has no cord it isn't used for keeping food cold!!

I don't want to do something silly, like magnetize the silver coating and cause them not to work that way, or even posibly damage the player like putting a magnet in the tray? Does anyone think I could do some harm storing them that way?

I would test this idea, but how long would that actually take? Since I am looking at long term storage, only removing them to use them then put them right back again, it would probly take a year with a magnet sitting on one to see if it has a long term effect! Can't wait that long :)

I figured this would apply as a case mod, since I would be modding a speaker case! Although for obvious reasons I won't be putting in any windows or cathodes/neon in this case :)

My basic plan is to simply remove the back of a case that is about 12" wide, 16" tall and 8" deep. The back is normally permanatly attached. I'd put hidden hinges on the inside, and a secret latch to hold it shut tight. To open, there would be a very small hole to insert a paper clip or saftey pin and release the latch so that the whole back swings open. This way there is no seam or hardware exposed to make it obvious that it opens for some reason.

Also I would do something inside the case to prevent the cds from slidng and banging around if it were moved for some reason. Clunking inside a case kinda gives away the secret something is in it! Might just mount the jewel cases with velcro to the inside orf the case.

All things considered, I think this might be a decent secret strorage Idea. Whta do ya think?

the best place to hide a file is in plain sight
goto your windows temp folder
and create a folder ext18873
thats the folder sp2 creates
create sub folders for all your stuff
put it in their
then get a disk editor and then remove the folder attribute from them
it will make them appear as files
when u need access give them back folder attributes and get your info back
also make sure your cleanup programs or whatever dont clear your temp files it will destroy the data
but ive been able to hide stuff from police that way when my pc was confiscated i got it back in 2 months due to lack of evidence, believe it or not

I got this idea from my dad who got it from someone else. It's called the poor mans patent. What you can do is mail a letter to yourself with your designs/whatever. When you get it back you will have a post-mark stamp with the date. This way if you find somebody else has the same idea, you can prove you had it first by having that letter you sent yourself. It proves it by the date the post office marked on it.

For example, if you notice a year later that somebody "stole" your idea, you can prove you had the idea first by showing the date on the letter. Get what I'm sayin? Might work in this instance. Hell, that or just get a patent for it. From what I hear it's not too expensive. Might as well look into it instead of living in paranoia and spending all this time on hiding a CD ;)

And if you don't want to do that, why not buy a safe? I have a cheap $30 fire-proof safe which I keep a bunch of old coins from my coin collection in. I have a penny from 1901, can ya beleive it? :)

Thanks for that idea, I'll have to try it!

But for various reasons of course I do still need a hard copy back up too! For one, I'm sure I will empty the temp directory sometime and delete my files, and also never know whan a crash might occur.

Only happened twice in 12yrs that a drive went bad one me. But one was a couple years ago and totally died. And another was brand new (about 4 months old) and had to be sent in for replacement.

So I do need that off drive copy too since these are original files and not replaceable.

What happens if I do that in a different directory that doesn't get erased? still work the same way?

Thanks tranz

You are correct from What I've heard and know also about patents. But one problem many people don't know is you cannot patent an Idea, only a product. From what If been told anyway.

So lets say I have an idea for a new type powersaw. I cannot patent the idea that the blade spins horazontally like a drill as a new type of saw, instead of the up and down scroll saw or vertically spining circular saw. I can only patent the design for my specific saw and blades for it. And I think now adays you have to have a prototype built also, not just plans, but I could be wrong.

As another example, look at all the weedeaters out there. No-one can patent the IDEA of spinning an object to cut grass or weeds! Rather it is a string, piece of chain, length of chainsaw chain, a steal bar or whatever, I can make my own product designed to spin an object to cut brush with!
I cannot take someone elses design and produce coppies, but I can use that idea and build my own similar type device, built differently patent it and compete against them in their own market! Happens everday!

Intel had the patent for cpu's I think, AMD builds the same thing, just does the same stuff in a different way, no problem! How many graphics programs are there, same Idea's, just done differently! Same with games, how many driving or killing games are there? Some-one had the IDEA for the first game, but anyone can program their own original game! Well if they can program they can, put it that way!

As far as a safe, well whats one of the first Things a thief looks for? Yes I have one, and that is so if I am robbed my valueables and cash will not be stolen! Let a thief steal the safe when he finds it, take it home, break into it and get $100 and a junk watch!
Meantime, he doesn't find the $1,000 and some rare coins hidden in another less secure hidding spot!
Was the thought of a weathly friend years ago! We found his safe opened and empty one day when he was giong to get the money to purchase a new motorcycle with. I was supposed to drive him over to pick it up. After the police left I asked him what he was going to do about buying the bike now, see if they'd take a check?
He said simply, No problem! We walked about 4 feet from the safe, he removed the lid from a 55 gallon barrel marked dog food, (right next to the barrel marked hog feed), then removed about 6" of dog food, took out about $3,000 and laughed!
Said the thief went to all the trouble of cracking the safe for a couple cheap fake jeweled knecklaces valued about $50 and got something like $150 cash too! I never asked, but always wondered what was in the HOG FEED!!

"instead of living in paranoia " hmmm, look at the world today! Look at any news source! You don't even have to have anything of value to be robbed now adays. And it happens everywhere! Not just big cities!

Better to be safe than sorry! Tiss better to waist a little time now than in the future say gee I wish I had done that!

That's always the best place to hide things, in plain sight. CK, you have an awesome idea. I would go for it, it doesn't sound too hard to make, and would be a great place to hide things.

you can get just about anything you want patent .. like if it is a idea or something you already have in full production .. or hell you could probly patent your a$$ if you wanted lol. But the problem is the time you may have to wait to get the patent. it can take several years to get one .. why dotn you put your docs. in like the little space between the mobo tray and right door ? lol .. or just put the docs some where in your case ? .. no one will look in there , unless you live with a bunch of pc tweak happy freaks lol :D

Hey the sovereign... how do you remove the folder attribute from a folder so as to make it appear as a file?
