Is it hard to perform mods to cd-rom drives? And will it effect the drives performance....

Depends what you do. I can't think of anything that would screw it up. Like, you can replace the LED fine as long as you have decent soldering skills... ....I made a window in <a href="

Could someone explain to me the how-to on stealthing a drive? I can see it being easy on a lian li but i don't see it happening on my Antec style case...

In regaurds to hurting the drive,
The only thing I wonder about is any added weight to the drive tray when Opened, don't want to trash or jam the mech. Also of course if painting, don't let it over spray into the drive!
I once had a Cd drive the motor went weak in. It worked great once spinning but wouldn't start up on it's own. So, I modded it
Was when drives were still really High $ items. Took the top off, mounted it in the second bay of the tower I am modding now, then when I wanted to use it, insert disk, close tray, spin with finger to start it, and away we go!
Maybe that was the beginning of the modding days, about 1995 maybe?
It worked really well that way only problem was worring about scratching a disk pressing to hard while spinnig it. Had to be careful. So I geuss a window wouldn't hurt nothing long as you don't watch the laser!!
