I am one of the "victims" of buying the prescott cpu(2.8ghz socket 478). Well after i realized the enormous temps that this cpu has i started finding ways to cool it down. Until now i bought the thermaltake vm7000 case that has 5 fans and the thermaltake volcano 7+. After i bought these my temps went from 50 idle and 65 load to 38idle and 50 load. Is there any way of cooling it more. I don`t want to change any cooler or go to water cooling. Just if there is any way too add something to lower the temps. My rig is as folows
Asus P4C800 deluxe mobo
prescott 2.8eghz
2x120gb 8mb hard disks
512mb ddr ram
samsung dvd-rw 16x +r 12x -r /dual layer
msi 48x cdrw
msi geforce 4 ti4200 128mb 8x agp
thermaltake purepower 420w psu
Thermaltake volcano 7+ cpu cooler
Prescott cooling
I dont know what Case that is. link?
Sounds like eithor a bad heatsink install or your case cooling just went to hell when you switched over.
What thermal past did you use?

I think you will get a little bit better temps by installing a different HS. I know you said you didn't want to go this way, but I have a friend who took one of those 50 dollar POS's apart and found it it was copper coated nickel. That and it wasn't even as if they made great contact, the nickel block was rough and uneven whiich is part of the reason he took it apart in the first place. One of the corners of his HS was peeling off when he was doing a CPU upgrade and he decided to investigate it.

This is the link of my case http://www.thermaltake.com/xaserCase/WinGo/v7000a.htm
and this is for my cpu cooler http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/volcano/rs/a1254.htm
i used servisol thermal paste.
I know that prescotts temps are high. I saw a few people saying that they get more than 48c idle and more than 60c full load, so i should be very happy with the 38 idle and 50 load. But as you all know cpu and mobo temps are never too low
