I just read your review on the pcabusers web site and great coverage. Also, I was curious on how much clearance there was at the edge of the motherboard (does the SP-97 stick out past the north edge of the board?). I am just concerned because installing on a NF7-S ver 2.0 and in a Raidmax 868 case. I just hope that the sink does not touch the bottom of the PSU.
Thanks for any input.

Hello kuya_chard007. Welcome to pca, and thank you for your comments. :)

The SP97 overhangs about 1/4 of an inch. I've heard from others who have a small case and using the NF7-S that it gets close to the psu, but doesn't touch it. That's all I can really say since I don't have that particular case here to check.

Hope that helps :) Please post back results if you do try. I believe it'll be ok from what I've seen.

Thanks for the welcome...this place has a wealth of info...the case is the Raidmax Scorpio 868, which was reviewed here at PCA. I am going to try and hopefully not be disappointed :) . I'll post back, but it prolly will not be until the end of February. Studying for the February Bar Exam. :D

We did review that case, but it wasn't me. And the one who did review it lives too far away to test it.

Good luck with your bar exam. ;)

Oh ok, thanks...small minor detail that I missed.

And thanks, hopefully on my down time I can order the sink and install it on the board. :)

How were the temperatures in the article gathered? Are they socket temps from the motherboard? Are they diode temps reported by the Athlon CPU, or are they gathered with a portable thermometer of some kind?

Thanks

Was yours all corroded at the base by the pipes like this? i sent off an email to thermalright to see if this is going to be a problem. I would thhink it could be cause if its corroded that means less heat transfer to the pipes... thats if its not just onthe ends.

Shouldn't it perform better

Post by WMphys04 »

Hey all,

I have a SP97 on my AMD XP3200+ in a ASUS mobo. I have a Vantec Stealth 92mm fan attached to the heat sink and artic silver 5 for good contact. The whole package is put in a coolermaster wavemaster case. I consistently have temperature readings of 52C with little to no load on the cpu. Not sure what the ambient is but it isn't that warm.
I was expecting better performance from this heat sink. Perhaps it is the wavemaster case, have heard some people complain that the area for air intake isn't quite large enough. But still, I see reviews with temps in the 30-40C range, yet I don't seem to be close to this. Any thoughts?

Welcome to pca :)

For the reported temps in the tests I used a temp sensor on the bottom of the cpu. I also checked with mobo monitor using the diode, but that isn't as accurate.

WMphys04,

Try running with your side panel off and see if the temps improve. If they do improve a lot, then the case cooling isn't good. If the temp is still high then it could be several things. One is the heatsink may not be installed correctly or fully contacting the raised cpu core. Be sure nothing is touching the heatsink and preventing full contact also. You may need to re-install it. What is your room temp like? A warm room will increase the cpu temp also.

If the above reasons aren't the problem, then how are you getting the temps? mobo monitor isn't always accurate. And be sure the settingts are right. Even then, mobo monitor runs around 5-9 degrees off my temp sensor.

welcome to pca :)

Wondering about the status of the SP-97 and the Scorpio case

Post by pestilence »

Hi there, I've got a Scorpio case with an Abit NF7-S and I'm looking at the ThermalRight SP97 heatsink and I'm wondering if anyone found out if the HS fit in the case or not.

Any help would be most appreciated, I'm not having a lot of luck finding this information.

Thanks,

Pest

Was in the same boat with the NF7-S and Scorpio Case. Found out that the sink overhangs the mobo about 1/4 inch. It would most likely hit the bottom of the PSU.

Therefore, I went with the SLK-900A/92mm fan and the DFI Ultra Infinity Board. Those are just my experiences.

Good Luck!
