Newbie Network question

Post by swinada »

I have 2 PC"s and a lappy. My Internet access is through a USB port to a highspeed wireless card. I have the Lappy connectet with a crossover cable. Now I would like to hook the second PC (kids computer) to the network. And i'm kind of lost on how to do that.

best bet is probably just to spring for a 4 port router - config will vary on what kind of modem you are using - some modems are also routers which means you need to drop a switch behind the router

you need

cable/dsl modem >>>router>>>(switch or hub if you don't have enough ports on the router)>>pcs

you can get combo wireless/wired routers too

my setup

dsl modem/router >>switch>>6 pcs connected with Cat5+replay tv

it's very simple to set up

post your type of service and existing modem and i'm sure we can give you some specific recommendations

my setup right now: wireless highspeed connected via USB to my PC, laptop and PC are connected via crossover cable NIC.
Since my incoming connection is a USB cable I can not hook that to a router, so it has to go to my main rig first and then to the other ones.
would it work if I went from my mainPC to a switch, and plug the other PC and Laptop also to the switch?

something like this.
PC's are running XP and Lappy WinME

By "Wireless Highspeed" what do you mean? Satelite or Wireless Cellular? If it's wireless cellular I'd be interested in knowing who you're getting it from and how much it costs. I have a cousin who needs it - he lives on a mountain with no hope for DSL or cable.

Is there a network connection on your modem (RJ45 network jack) or only a USB?

If it's only USB you can't use a router.

Sound like you're already sharing internet access with one laptop via a crossover cable, right?

What you need to do is buy a 5 port network switch (about $35 at Office Depot, Walmart), You're also going to need 3 network cables.

You're going to lose the crossover cable. Use one of your new cables to conenct the desktop to the network switch. Use the other two cables to connect the two laptops each to the network switch. Make sure you have 3 green lights on the network switch to confirm all three connections.

Configure the 2nd laptop the same way you did the first. I assume you're using Window's Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the desktop? So all you need to do is configure TCP/IP on the laptops to "Automatically aquire" both the IP and the DNS.

Thanks for your help Pinguin. So if i go with the switch I use regular cables and not crossovers, right.?

For Info on what we have here up north, here a smal description: 2.4 Ghz wireless (radio) DSSS transmission from access point to small antenna at your location. No telephone line required. Radio unit inserts into PCI, PCMCIA, or ISA slot on your computer, and connects to antenna using 3/8 inch diameter co-axial cable. Radio is IEEE802.11-b compliant, 11Mbps half-duplex. USB units are now also available, and simplify installation. External radios can be provided in special applications where networks need connectivity, at a slightly increased price.

thats how the antenna looks like, you need a clear and good view of the accesspoint tower.
The modem only has a USB connection, at least mine does.
The system has its up and downs, last January a windstorm twistet the main tower and everybody west of our little town lost connections for about a month, since the weather was at minus 35 C and nobody wantet to go and climb that tower to adjust.
For the past few months it has been pretty good, with the occasional days where it is slower then molasses.
I get and avaerage of about 75KB download, best I ever noticed was around 150KB. It sure beats the 33.6 telephon line, our only other option. The cost, 40 $ Canadian a month limited to 6GB transfer, after that 10 $ 1Gig.Image

just to make this post, post very long, this picture here of the main access point tower. :)

No you don't NEED a crossover cable, but if you want to save some money you can go ahead and use that crossover cable you already have between the desktop and the switch. If the switch is an autoswitch (like the newer Linksys switches) it automatically detects a crossover cable and configures itself accordingly.

If it's the older design switch, one of the ports (usually #1) will have 2 jacks - one for a regular cable and one for a crossover. Just plug your crossover cable into the crossover jack (do not plug anything into the other jack for that port).

Any info on the companie that runs that tower wierless thingy? I'd like to see if anything like that is available around here. Or if I could get it set up?

Some little guy in town is/was trying to do something like that but his prices were off the wall! You got different speeds buy how much you pay per month, which wasn't to bad. BUT, you had to buy his equipment for your computer for like $900, then found oput in further discusion you don't really even buy it, they take it back if you cancel the service, but you don't get your money back!
Also $50 charge for him to just copme out to the house and see if he could supplie the service in the first place.

The idea sounded as it would work fir me, but the terms were nuts!!

His equipment was different, but sounds like same principle!

http://motorola.canopywireless.com/

I just looked this over. Looks good perhaps?

Has 2 mile range I think it said or with user antenna on site a 10 mile range. I think that's what it said.
Claims to be cheaper and faster than DSL cable Sattilite etc....

I hope to contact them monday for more info and the cost of setting myself up a tower :)
Perhaps I can become a Highspeed rural ISP :)
I got the land for a tower, and people that hate the dialup service but have no other choice now!

It mentions GPS. I did not fully understand exactly how this works as far as connecting to the net itself?
It operates at 2.7 to 5.7ghz wireless like network cards or telephone to comunicate from the tower to the home user as I understand it. BUT, just how does that signal then get to the net itself? DO I need a physical connection to the net like a T1 at my location still? Does it use cell services? Is it to and from a satalite? They claim faster than one, so I dought the last option!

Anyway, might be something to check out. Might be available in some peoples area,

For me, maybe I'll sell some cars and become an ISP?

Canton Kid, you would need at least a T1
Depends on how many people you want to service
My freind had a setup in oregon and was serving a whole vally, he had 2 t3 lines, and it was mucho fast- cant comment on latency since i never gamed or ran traceroutes when i checked it out though
