need suggestions on a new router

Post by Absolut Talent »

well...this Belkin one we got is the biggest piece of horseshit I have ever seen.......

when I download with bittorrent during the day, I come back later to find that it dropped the conenction an hour after I left.

When I try pinging servers (depends on the game, but looks like CS definitly makes it spaz out) it will completly drop the connection

I have to manually go downstairs and unplug the router for a few seconds

So i was wondering what a good router is to get. I was looking at a linksys before

the biggest thing I need, is to be able to set my main computer in a DMZ, and i need port forwarding (so i can still use my server for webspace) and atleast 3 ports (one for each system)

So should I get a Linksys
or is there something better for the same price?

Linksys works fine for me - what I use at home and many of my clients. I know it's fine for gaming and it's easy to setup port forwarding and DMZ.

D-Link is okay, so is Blittz (I buy those at Walmart). Never tried Belkin or Microsoft's.

The one I have is a Siemens 4-port DSL/Cable router with a built in print server. I installed it in May when I got DSL and it's been on ever since (24/day 7/week) and I have yet to reset it or turn it off. Mine is a model SS2614. No complaints here for this Siemens.

I have an SMC and I have been very happy with it. The only thing about it that has been less than satisfactory is the print server. It doesn't do bidirectional and it was a pain to configure.

There are bunch of discussions about routers at http://www.dslreports.com.

Still using my trusty old Netgear RT311. Haven't had a problem with it since I bought it....well other than Netgear abandoning firmware support. There are some patched Zyxel firmwares floating around, but I'm a little leery about using them.

My dad has a Dlink that hasn't given him a bit of trouble.

Linksys, on the other hand...........CRAP! At least from my experience with the BEFSR11.

One more thing. Lots of good reviews and comparisons on this site.

I have the Linksys you mention . Have had it running for about 2yrs without any problems at all. Was super easy to set up and that was huge to me as I knew nothing about what I was doing when I set it up. I would recommend it.

Linksys had a LOT of problems with their earlier designs. All the new routers are Revision 2.0 which work fine. I find them to be easier and more intuitive to navigate the control panel than most other designs, and they have very flexible port forwarding and other advanced settings.

I have the linksys-no problems if you have a good provider -here in NJ 7 months now 24/7 network has been connected and I havented rebooted or reset. The firmware is excellent as a 5 yr old child could foward ports via the browser based interface. Security hasnt been a problem as the firewall has passed every security test site i have seen with flying colors. Also had this router running a year in oregon. but my provider there(charter) was unstable as hell
