I don't know nothing about wireless

Post by Lmandrake »

OK guys, son number 2 is living in a house off-campus 2700 miles away. Rather than have him try to wire his rental house, I thought he might use wireless networking. I don't know anything about it. Can any of you point to some good sites or other sources of info? How much would a decent setup cost?

They have cable broadband, three pcs and a mac laptop in the house.

Thanks

dlink DI-624 or DI-744, 3x dwl-ag520, and for the mac Step on it, er um...DWL-122

You dont need to know anything. its just as easy as wired with a router. change the password, choose different chanels, and if you want enable the security.

It's so easy to setup, it's absurd.

They need a WiFi Router/Access Point (AP), then they need a WiFi NIC for each computer (if one of the computers is in the same room as the cable modem, then you can save the cost of one WiFi NIC and just connect that computer via hardline to the 4 port switch on the router.

Any 802.11b WiFi router and NIC wil work fine. For laptops you need a PCMCIA WiFi NIC, for destops they make both a USB and a PCI card, but I would recommend the USB so you can put it as high as possibe (like on top of a desk hutch or bookcase) for the best reception.

Any brand will work fine, but if you want to keep the price manageable, Walmart sells Blitzz Wifi gear for cheap - around $65 for the router/AP and $40 for the NICs. I use them a lot and they work great.

It's completely plug and play - instructions are included are very simple. With Cable there's nothing to it. Connect the router, turn the modem off and on so it recognizes the router, then install the NICs and their drivers.

This will work fine except that the network won't be secure - anyone outside or in another apartment will be able to get on their network and steal net access. So I would also recommend using encryption keys. Just make up an encryption key and enter it into the router (router control panel is accessed using a web browser from any computer on the network) and each NIC.
