Belkin Wireless Router F5D9230-4

My father-in-law gave me this router. I can't get my laptop to see the thing. I even have the security completely off. I did check and it is supposed to be broadcasting. The router used to work when my father-in-law had it. I was able to go over to his house, turn on my laptop and connect easily. I'm guessing that it's went bad from that time to the time he gave it to me. Any ideas before I trash it?

my belkin was crap...first try to update firmware though.

They ARE crap. Trust me. Belkin makes lousy routers.

Not unusual to see them lockup or the Wifi to just fail.

That's what I figured. It was free and I thought I'd give it a go.

Who does make a decent wireless router?

I prefer Linksys, but flashed with the DD-WRT firmware.

Yes, I meant unusual.

I like Linksys. They're pretty reliable. Keep in mind these things are small computers and they find bugs in the firmware all the time. Whenever a router gives you trouble you should upgrade it to the latest firmware.

I do love Linksys WRT54 routers with the hacked DD-WRT firmware. I have one as my main house router. That same router when it was running the Linksys firmware used to require a reboot once ever 3 or 4 months. Since I've flashed it to the DD-WRT firmware it's been a ROCK. It's been running continuously for 2 years with never a reboot. However this is not for the faint of heart and will void the warranty.

Any stock Linksys router does the job and won't set you back more than $70. You don't need one of the fancy 802.11N routers. A G router does the job. You also don't need to pay for the "Speed Boost" version.

check for the hell of it with belkin some of there networking stuff is lifetime warrienty .and im sure you still have a sales slip laying around

I've had great luck with D-Link. Mine's been rock solid for about 3 years now. Didn't even upgrade the firmware until this last couple months & then it's only been faster.

My Netgear Rangemax has been running great. The range on it is great and I don't even have to reset the thing. I have bought one of Netgear's newer "N" routers, had to take that piece of crap back to the store, even with the latest firmware, it couldn't stay connected right. Not to mention it had to reset every time you made any configuration change...

I finally got it working. It turns out that my laptop driver needed re-installed. We'll see how long it works.
