Wifi range extenders used to suck. They would only work with certain brands of routers, and only on certain days when the wind blew from the east. Times have changed.

Had a friend, who is a non-techie, who bought one of these to extend the range of his router. It was very easy for a noob to setup. Quick and painless, with a simple touch screen interface. The unit has good reviews on Amazon:

Okay, actually got to set one of these up today, although it was the more expensive dual-band gigabit version. This one:

VERY easy to setup. It scans for networks, you pick your networks (two of them if you have both 2.5 and 5 GHz), enter the Wifi passwords, and then you have an option to clone the SSID and passwords.

For some reason it wants to default to a different SSID (it takes the original SSID name and adds "_RE" to the end of it for the cloned network. However, you can manually override that. I did, and named the cloned repeater network the same as the original. It let me do it and it works fine. This allows your devices to seamlessly connect whichever network has the stronger signal.
