I've been wanting to setup an OpenVPN at my home for use from my laptop when I travel, but every time I look into it, it's rather daunting. This couldn't be easier from what I've read. Steve Gibson gave it a mention on Security Now last week.

Dont you have one of the good Asus routers? openvpn is built in.

There's a bunch of mods for Tomato with Openvpn as well.
Although to be fair, I havent run Tomato in 10 years
