8500DV AIW or 7500 AIW?

Post by wpublic »

i just want to know should i splurge ( i see on circuitcity.com they have 8500 DV for approx. 250.00 before $50.00 rebate) and go on and get the 8500DV or will the 7500 AIW get it done? i do not play a lot of games on my system, i am more of a freelance "cinemagratographer" experimenting in digital video.

at this time i am putting together a system:

Shuttle AK31 Rev. 3.1 ( i think, but maybe version 2, have not seen it yet, will see it tonight, but he says it is in a grey box, making me think it might be a 3.1)
AMD Athlon TBird 1.2
AK-7 HS w/ Delta 80mm fan
512MB Crucial PC 2100 DDR )(2x256)
Antec SOHO File Server series case w/350W PSU

the Athlon 1.2 will be "attempted" to be OC'ed to around 1.6 and yes, from what i have read here and other places, i will get a better chipset fan/maybe HS, too.(Vantec Iceberg...)

SB Extigy external USB sound, from my old system, but i am open to suggestions for a new sound card, because i hate the SB Live, and i refuse to put it in my system, because their drivers and IRQ settings are so "quirky". i hear good things about Hurricane and a bit about Turtle Beach.

not sure of the OS, I really want to use my Redhat 7.2 (or Mandrake 8.1) on it, but have yet to find some suitable video editing software for it(don't know yet if ATI included software will work in Linux). so probably i will go wilth Xp Pro.

so as far as video capture goes, i am wondering if the 8500Dv is gonna give me anything extra that the 7500 AIW won't? don't care about RAM, got plenty in other places. and i am open to OC'ing the 7500 AIW, if needed.

well i got the 8500DV for like 200 bucks at circuit city (after $50 rebate, offer expires 8/15/02) the 7500 AIW was $150 and it seemed justifiable to spend the extra 50 bucks. dam, i have been watching that one for a few months now and finally had the balls to go and get it. of course i am sure pretty soon, there will be a 9700DV or something going for like 500 bucks.

but it will be a day or 3 before i get it installed(Shuttle AK31a). i am wondering what OS should i use? anyone out there who has this card, LMK what experiences you have had with this card in your OS. My choices are win2k Pro(NTFS), RedHat 7.2, Mandrake 8.1, Win XP Pro and , if i really need to, win 98SE.

this system will not be used for gaming but for video capture/editing, other than that, i will probably just OC and do benchmarks on this system.

I have my aiw 7500 on a win2k system and it runs great, and my other 2 ati systems with 8500's have 2k also so I sugest that OS. it really is the best OS out there!

Most 1.2 T birds settle at 1.4 , I think 1.6 could be hard with air cooling. Luck man!
A little crazy, but safe enough
