There's no need to think, ehr, at least not a lot to think. Just read one of the many direct comparisons you can find on your favourite hardware review page.
Both cards are the best and they cost you an arm and a leg though I would go with the ATI card :D

both cards out edge each other in mixed benchmarks, so the about even out, keep in mind that they will level your wallet as well, and that you could build a whole system for as much as 1 cost.
Im running a overclocked ti4200 right now, and will hopefully upgrading to a 9700 at the end of the summer.

anandtech has really indepth video card reviews, they have the budget to do so ;)

ATI radeon 9700 pro, 9800 128mb or the 9800 256mb

That goes from good-> better -> best
Gone for good. But never say never

Whatever you can afford :)
You don't need a top top of the line to play games, some people lack the realization that not everyone will have the $$$ to spend...but since your looking for the best, GeForce FX 5900ULTRA :) Best of the best, 100$ more then the 9800pro, but its the best of the best..

If your gonna dump the $ on a 9700 pro, get a 9800 (non pro) they are the replacement for the 9700pro..they clock faster, OC better, and most of All are better preformers :D

9800NP is the same clock as the 9700Pro
the core is slightly updated to fix and smooth out a couple of things in their HyperZ
