My Brand NEW GF3 ti 500 is a buttslut, it locks up on any 3d game, for a good say 5 min it will be fine work like its suppose to, ive read every review there is to read and every Trouble shooting dillie there is on the net. i think it may have somthing to do with my VIA chipset and IRQ settings. but eather i cant change em' or it still dont work properly.
my card is from Inno 3D so it uses the detenator drivers.
my comps specs:
DFI K6BV3+/66 "mom-board"
333MHz. K6/III @ 400MHz. (multiplyer @ 4.0, freq @ 100MHz)
30GIG HDD "WDC 300"
160MB of ram (one stick pc 133 the other pc 100)
Win 98 SE
Soundblaster live
GF3 Ti 500 (duh)
im going to try to fiddle with the irq's and clock of the CPU/GPU
I am just about ready to pass a extreemly large magnet over my videocard, plz plz plz plz plz someone

not to insult you but I assume you have the latest drivers for your stuff. all the via junk, sound and what ever else including bios? some times these probs jsut fix them selves. Also all traces of earlier drivers/videocard removed from system?

Socket 7 motherboards and AGP videocards were problematic together.

Quite frankly running that videocard with that cpu is a waste. <img src="

Gotta wonder if this post isn't a gag but...
Socket 7 board can't supply enough current for modern 3D cards. And Nexus_7 is right - even if the card DID work on the mobo, it would be no faster than an old Riva TNT2 or a Voodoo3 - you're SEVERELY CPU limited.
Take the vid card back and invest the money in a new mobo & CPU.

OKAY after jsut about shooting my computer to pieces trying out all the stuff you guys said ( updated drivers bios settings ect.) there was some left-over drivers and shit form my elsa TNT/2 card got rid of them, no effect

It turns out the card was 'semi-fried' i under-clocked core and mem IT WORKS!!!! alot better then my elsa i might add. but still this is unacceptedable it shouldnt have to be underclocked to work, so im sending it back and in gonna make a new comp.
what u guys think if i went and got a Athlon XP 1900
and a ECS 830LR mobo (SIS735, 266FSB, 2 SDR & 2 DDR, ATA100,
AC97, onboard LAN, 4XAGP, 5PCI (no ISA

), ATX)
lain li pc-60 Chassis (mobo chassis CPU fan should be bout $400)
when i get the money i think ill just buy a ATI Redeon 8500 witch is about the same performace and i dont think its as '

up' prone as the geforce 3 is and its WAY cheaper
Only thing i dont know what i want is the heatsink/fan ive seen a few that looked like they would be good. but im not sure. noise ISNT and issue and im open to the idea of water cooling
tell me what you people think of my "to be" comp's specs
Thanks for all your time guys i really appreciate it

...it shouldnt have to be underclocked to work
Again I wonder if you're pull our chain, but it's possible you really don't understand what just happened.
I don't want to offend you, but I would like to clarify this for the benefit of others who may visit the forum and want information on this topic.
You HAD TO underclock the Ti-500 to get it to work on a Socket 7 mobo... your mobo is INCAPABLE of supplying enough current to that card (as we all explained to you previously). By radically underclocking it you're making the card use less current which allowed it to operate. Even so I'm suprised it works at all.
It's rather absurd that you're complaining about this card being "f'd up". This is like buying a big block 8 cylinder V8 engine at your Chevy dealer to replace the 6 cyclinder engine in your old Chevy Vega and then complaining to General Motors that it won't work.
Just upgrading to a faster CPU with your existing TNT2 card will improve performance, even though the TNT2 is getting long in the tooth by today's standards.
You're on the right track with the purchase of an Athlon system, although you'll need to get an opinion from AMD users here on your choices - I'm familiar enough with AMD hardware to say.

This is one strange post. The hardware of yesteryear mated to current best hardware.
If you buy a Athlon XP, why don't you leave that generic ECS crap alone, buy a little slower cpu, and a better motherboard.
A quality motherboard is the foundation of a decent computer.
ECS boards aren't $50 because they have lower overhead or are your friends....
Its all clear to me now

Thanks flying penguin and jethro bodine i agree with you both it is most likely my mobo but i feel that the chipset was also partly to blame alot of problems with VIA chipsets and GF's. But anyway sending my card back today gettin' my moolah back. so im lookin' round for a good mobo. what is a good one with DDR my budget is $400 for the CPU/mobo/HSF/ram
i would like to get 512MB of DDR ram being i make halflife/Q3A maps and compileing takes alot of ram to do fast.
i think ill lower my standards like you said jethro bodie "The hardware of yesteryear mated to current best hardware. If you buy a Athlon XP, why don't you leave that generic ECS crap alone, buy a little slower cpu, and a better motherboard."
T-Bird 1.4Ghz is my new CPU its cheap as hell and thats what i need.
so whats a good board for $100/$150?

Knight:
I got an Epox 8KHA+ when the boards for XPs were first coming out, it was the one to beat in the reviews. This board can be had for around $100, I've had no issues with it. In a subsequent review, Tom said it wasn't the best choice for overclocking, at this level of performance, I think OCing is foolish and unneccessary anyway. How much difference is there between 100 fps and a 110fps anyway?
You don't have to take my word on the Epox, there are a lot of reviews of KT266A boards out. I only advise against ECS remembering my one try at using an offbrand motherboard and getting 20-30% less performance in Q2 from my P2-333 than I ended up getting from a name brand BX board. Get a refurb Shuttle ak31 from newegg for $59 and couple bux for s/h and a $50 Duron 1 gig, some $75 Crucial PC2100 DDR and OC the mess to 1200 or so and THEN put your GeForce in there.

You won't be sorry.
Oh, and take back that Ti-500 and get a gf3-ti 200 so you can use the difference in price to help pay for the stuff I mentioned above. According to some of the nvidia-ites in here, they OC pretty well and are more than adequate for any of your 3D gaming needs.
Putting a ti-500 in a K6-III rig is like serving gourmet food on paper plates. Ya just don't it.
