If money doesn't matter to you(yeah right!) and if all you do is Quake3, then go for the GeForce2 Ultra. If you are a normal person that use your computer to do "actual" work and some games, go for the Radeon 64MB DDR or AIW Radeon. Image quality is very important IMO, especially when you have to work on Windows Desktop.

Try Running at 1600x1200 on your Desktop, you will notice the difference between a GTS Ultra and the Radeon. The Radeon is simply much better

RADEON

Post by marscheese »

I just got a Radeon 32 mg card and I love it. I probably wouldn't go 64 mg. just because from the benchmarks I've seen, it doesn't give you that much of a preformance difference, and you can find the Radeon 32 mg for about $150, talk about a bang for your buck!!!

The reasons you buy the retail 64MB version are very scientifical marscheese, I could explain them, but I'd have to talk above all your heads... ;-)

Actually, I've had both, reasons I went to 64:
1. Benchmarks are 10% faster, coincidently the same percentage the core/memory are faster.

2. 5.5ns memory. Easily overclocks to 200MHz, rock solid stable, for more performance.

3. To be able to say, "Boo-yah! I have a 64MB card!" Hmmm, no that wasn't it...

4. More framebuffer to load textures on upcoming games/ability to turn texture compression off without performance hit.

5. VIVO functionality. Have not discounted pulling 27" tv out of my bedroom to see what big ass Q3 looks like.

6. The ability to tell V5 owners my card is ALWAYS faster than theirs. (the V5 sometimes equals the 32) Er, no that wasn't it either...

Dere you have it. This stuff was worth the $80. difference to me.

I don't wanna start a war here or anything, but the only real thing the 64meg Radeon has over the 32mb Radeon is, well, the extra 32mb. Which currently, only one game comes to mind that can actually take advantage of it. Quake3. Besides that, my 32meg All-in-Wonder Radeon can do everything a 64meg VIVO can do PLUS it has a T.V. Tuner :D Can anybody say "free TiVO"? hehehe.

But he did say money was no object and if it isn't and you dont' need all the fancy features a Radeon has to offer, why wouldn't you go with a GeForce2 Ultra? It's the fastest card out on the market, no doubt.

War! (heehee- JK)
Anyway, have to differ with you on your opinion the only difference in Radeons is the RAM. Here's why:

http://tomshardware.com/graphic/00q4/00 ... on-07.html
64 is 10% faster than 32 across all benchmarks, Q3.

http://tomshardware.com/graphic/00q4/00 ... on-08.html
At MDK2, it's more like 15% faster on the 64.

http://tomshardware.com/graphic/00q4/00 ... on-09.html
10% faster on the 64 for Evolva, too.

http://www3.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1340&p=6
Anand finds the same as Tom, Q3, 10%.

http://www3.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1340&p=7
Anand finds ~10% MDK2

I don't know. Is 8-15 frames a big deal? I only play online, so I want every one I can get. (although this Radeon thing is the first time I'm actually using a slower card for better image quality)

Jethro Bodine - I'm not saying that the 64meg isn't better than the 32meg, I'm just saying that it's not a big enough performance increase (for me) to go out and buy it over the 32megger. Now, this is my preference. I'd rather use that extra ~$80 for some RAM, a game, etc. Of course, I'm a poor shmuck that needs every penny.

Graphics cards are comming out so quickly now-a-days to where by the time that 64meg of RAM on that Radeon can actually be used to your advantage more so than 10% increase in frames, something better and faster will be out...... .....Such as the Radeon2 <img src=http://www.hipnotictranz.homestead.com/files/evil.gif>

So, yes, you are right. The 64meg VIVO is faster than the 32meg/All-In-Wonder. But are those 5-10 frames worth $80? That's what the consumer has to think about. I said "no" And for saying that now, I get to get another hard drive for RAID-0 :D

Well I know the next cards are probably like 4 months or so down the road but last weekend I went and bought a Creative GF2 Ultra. I'll get most of my money out of it because it will get moved over to my other system when the next big thing comes out. I ripped off the stock heatsink and stuck a blorb on it. Then I cranked up the core to 275 and the memory to 500. I'm happy...

Radeon

Post by JohnM »

My preference is the 64meg VIVo Radeon.

I had an Ultra in my system for a few days. I got it for a system I was building for someone else, so naturally I had to try it out :)

The Ultra was fast as hell, but there is no way I'm giving up the superb image quality of the Radeon for a few fps.
