Getting laggy video on some of my Divx files... need a fix

Post by FlyingPenguin »

I've downloaded a few Divx video files (some West Wing episodes, and all the new Battlestar Galactica episodes) that run rather laggy on my desktop. They're watchable, but they're laggy like the old low-motion Divx codec used to be.

It's not the video clip though - if I copy the files to a data DVD and play them on my Phillips DVD player that plays Divx files, they run smooth.

I've tried this on all my workstations and my laptop and they all do it.

I'm running the latest free Divx 5.21 codec. Only other codecs I have installed is the free XVid 1.0.3 and AC3 v0.63 audio filter.

Anyone run into this and know how to fix it?

Thx

I don't have a real idea but I have some suggestions.
First check which codec is used while playing those AVIs, Xvid can be set to play other FourCC (DIVX, DX50) and Divx is set by default to decode other mpeg4.

Uninstall Divx and see if xvid can handle those files better ... and if not try the other way around.

I only have the latest Xvid installed since recent Divx versions always claim ALL other FourCC no matter what setting in their options (very annoying in my eyes). Most of my videos are Xvid encodes with fourcc set to DX50 (beats me why the encoders still do that), so no real loss there ... and should I encounter one rare file that won't cooperate with Xvid I can always install Divx real quickly and uninstall later (or try VLC instead of MPC).
