The best way to convert avi/xvid/mpeg to DVD and DVD to xvid/avi is here!

Post by UberNeuman »

Just thought I'd share this with those of you who would like to put your videos/movies/tv shows on DVD, but don't want the hassle of learning the various ins-and-outs of the many programs out there, or having to tie up your computer for hours and hours on end:

GUI4FFMPEG is the best tool I've ever used for converting avi xvid or mpeg to the DVD format. You may have to adjust the settings a bit, but this program has yet to let me down. It's fast - it only took me about 30 minutes to convert a 700MB pal SVCD to a fully readable ntsc DVD mpeg2 file.

And unlike many of the other conversion programs out there, Gui4ffmpeg took everything I threw at it and maintained the high quality of the avis and xvids that I had on my hard drive - plus this program is free! :D

If you do give this program a try, I'd suggest encoding with AC3 six channel sound, even if the source file has only two channels of sound - encoding with two channels doesn't work and leads to glitchy DVD's (in my case) - anyway, set-top DVD players will down-mix the 6 channels back to 2 channels. All the DVD's I've made using Gui4ffmpeg's AC3 six channel have been perfect.

This program makes creating DVD mpeg2 files with AC3 sound a walk in the park - and double it up with TMPGEnc DVD Author and you've got yourself a one-two punch.

TMPGEnc DVD Author has to be paid for, but I like the ease of use it provides....

EASY WAY TO MAKE YOUR DVD'S INTO XVID/DIVX:

FairUse Wizard is a program for those of us who want a fairly fast program for making our dvds into xvids or divx files, without having to use a bunch of programs to do it. Load your DVD into your computer's dvd drive, start FairUse Wizard - a few clicks later, the program will rip your dvd and convert it into the format you choose.. Best of all - it's free, free, free!

Fair Use Wizard - make your DVDs into xvid/divx with a few clicks...

just saw this post. thanks uber! both programs work good. the pnly problem i had was with TMPGEnc DVD Author. when i tried to use the begin output feature my computer would reboot. same for write DVDfolder to dvd r/rw. Not that I needed to use those 2 options but i thouhgt i'd give them a try.

used nero to burn and made a flawless copy.

Glad to see it worked for you - and Nero is great for burning DVDs... I like to make menus, so that's why I use TMPGEnc DVD Author, but it's all about what works good for you.

D.I.K.O is another program that I've used... I put a bunch of House M.D. episodes on DVD for a friend using this program - but I had to re-encode the sound to the AC-3 format, because if you're using a digital output with a home theater set-up - there'll be no sound if you use the MP2 format...

The MP2 audio seems to work with standard L/R jacks...

Maybe it's just me but I prefer to use TMPGEnc to handle the MPEG1 to MPEG2 conversion along with the 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz audio conversion. If needed I'll use BeSweet to convert PAL to NTSC and then use DVD Maestro to author the DVD structure and menus.

One problem I've seen with these one click programs is usually they are hacks to the DVD standard and allow for a VCD to be perceived to be a DVD complaint file.

You can use Gui4ffmpeg to change DVD Vob files into Xvid - just load up the .vob file from your
DVD into the program, then change the target box to mpeg4... It's just as easy...

Did you use the Batch command to process more than one file.

Just choose your first avi/mpg file like you would normally, then check the settings you want, then click on Batch (which is above the Open File tab) then choose Add current command, then do the same with every other file you want to convert...

Click on Batch and choose View batch file - to check to see if all your files have been added. Once you've added all the files you want to convert, then click Batch again, then click Run batch file...

Just a note, Batch processing is somewhat buggy - sometimes it'll stop processing before the file has been totally converted - but that's happened rarely to me....

Why is it that when I use Gui4ffmpeg to convert a video that is 4:3 it always comes out full screen after I burn it with nero. I use TMPGEnc DVD to author. Nothing worse than Bruce Willis with an elongated head.

I'm a noob at this so I assume its something simple that I am overlooking.

Try testing your output with the Aspect setting - you can find it on the right by the Format setting - If you have a 4:3 source that has a widescreen 16:9 aspect - then change the output to 16:9 then start the encode for a minute or so, then cancel it...

You can click on the file and run it to check the output....

Ive tried every aspect ratio and none of them look like the original. Some wont even burn in nero. I get a message saying that nero cant burn because the size is wrong. not sure whats wrong.

Sounds like your files are too big to fit on a 4.7GB - after you've made your DVD, before you burn it, you'll have to use DVD Shrink to compress the output...

About the aspect ratio - are you letting Nero re-encode the DVD? What is the source on the file you're trying to make your DVD from?

the files i am trying to burn are at the 3.5 gig. Iam not sure i'm following you. I dont get a nero error saying the files are to big. The problem is when I use Gui4ffmpeg. Thats when the video is put in the wong aspect ratio. I have tried it with tv shows made in widescreen and they come out full screen.

Nero doesnt re-encode them, it just starts burning them. If I burn in vcd then they will re-encode in them. But I am burning in dvd video mode. What do you mean by "What is the source on the file you're trying to make your DVD from?" I'm a noob to this.

I use dvdshrink to make backups of my dvds and dont have a problem with it.

Thankk you for your help Uber, I appreciate it!
