OK - I'm tired of trying to play DOOM with a GTX 660 card, so I'd like to get something with some more horse power. Are these good deals on the 970?

I'd like to stay with at least a 970 card. The 980 goes up about $100 more, so the 970 should be okay with DOOM.

970 is fine if your CPU is ok as well.

The specs you are reading off is since they are B-stock it's a generic listing for the stuff. Basically they are telling you your going to get a video card with it's power cable and pretty much nothing else.

The rpices are ok. It's 40-50 bucks off a new card price for the most part. They come with a warranty and it's a very reputable maker. If I didnt have one, I would feel comfy buying one.

That CPU should be fine, I ran that before my current one and I dont recall any real issues.

970 is a good card, I would expect to see better prices now that the 1070s are out.

Problem is supply on the new ones is short so prices on the odl havent gone down much.

The 970 is like 15-20% better frame rates.

Problem is I'm a budget. The cost must be less than $300. I'd like to get a 980, but it costs about $100 more than a 970.

The 1060 card runs the newer Pascal architecture which is more efficient and probably cheaper to make compared to the older Maxwell based 980. The 1060 only requires a 6 or 8 pin while the 980 needs 2 x 8 pins. Not having to produce a board that has two connectors also helps reduce overall cost. Eventually, the 980 will drop in price once everyone starts dumping them to get 10xx cards.

The main difference between the two cards is clock and boost speeds. The cheaper of the two requires a singles 6 pin and runs at 1556 MHz with an 1771 MHz boost. The card that's $20 more (Second link) requires am 8 pin connector and runs at 1594 MHz with a 1847 MHz boost. The second card also has a higher factory overclock. The first card has the following ports: 2 x Dual-link DVI-D 1 x HDMI 2.0b 1 x DisplayPort 1.4 while the second card drops a DVD-D port in favor of more displayports: 1 x Dual-Link DVI 1 x HDMI (Gold Plated) 3 x DisplayPort (Gold Plated) .

The cards have the same memory and probably run very close in real-world gaming. I would choose the second card because it will be more desirable when you go to resell it. Both cards carry a 3 year warranty from Gigabyte. I've never dealt with their customer service so I can't speak to that. The only issue I saw in the reviews is that Gigabyte's software to overclock and monitor the card sucks. You don't need that anyway. MSI Afterburner is free and works with any card. It will also allow you to monitor your temps while gaming.

What are display ports? Currently using a DVI port with my monitor. I know about HDMI, but never heard of a display port.

Display port is becoming the defacto standard for high-end computer monitors. It's a better standard than DVI because it supports higher resolution / refresh rate combinations (it's required for NVidia GSync for instance). HDMI has never been a good computer monitor standard - it's an HDTV standard. They always throw one in in case you want to connect it to an HDTV.

Best Buy even carries them, but I doubt you'd find them in-store.

I would guess that these B-Stock cards are from those trading up to the 10xx series. You don't get any accessories nor are you able to trade up but they do come with a 1 year Warranty.
