I've done similar things on a couple of Dell boxes down the years. With the older video cards, power and heat became issues. The current back-up house computer is a 5 year old Dell with an I7 @ 3.5 and a 970. I put in an extra fan and a better power supply. Before I upgraded the cooling, it was getting into thermal slowdown from the heat. Dell frequently uses one exhaust fast that draws air over the cpu, so if the gpu does not exhaust out of the case, you need to add more fans.
