I hate HDMI. It's a terrible standard, and usually badly implemented on PCs.
Bought some new PC HDTVs for the new house, and of course they no longer have VGA ports on them. I have always used VGA ports on my Media Center PCs because they work flawlessly and the quality is as good as anything else when used on a TV - even at 1080p.
Seems like Intel and/or Windows poorly implements HDMI audio. Half the time I'll turn on the TV and there's no audio, or I'll minimize to the desktop to do some browsing and when I go back to Media Center I've got no audio. Then you have to change source inputs on the TV away from the PC and then back to force the audio to be reacquired.
I gave up on that and instead bought a couple of these nifty little boxes. They work like a champ. No more sound issues. Video quality looks great even at 1080p:

Christians warn us about the anti-christ for 2,000 years, and when he shows up, they buy a bible from him.
