Thanks FP. I doubt I'll go SLI again but I'd hate to see it removed. I'm definitely not getting a reference card. I don't fancy dumping 60 to 80 C heat inside my case.

Informative Q&A here from NVidia. Among the many things they address is the reason they picked the amount of memory. I think their answer is valid. Few games use more than 6GB of Ram at 4K, and any more RAM than 10GB would dramatically increase the cost of the card.

I have been rethinking this myself, and I'll probably get an EVGA 3080 instead of waiting for a Ti version, once real benchmarks are out and teething problems are sorted out.

I will, however do some comparison of GPU transcoding between the 1080 and the 3080 and if it's a dramatic enough difference I may pickup a 3080Ti next year for the gaming PC and move the 3080 into the workstation.

I'm going to get a 3080 as well when I can get one. I've been wanting to play Control but I'd really like to have RTX and DLSS when I do. The 1080 doesn't have those technologies. I'd also like to eventually pick up a flight stick a get the new Flight Sim.

I just realized there's one game I have that supports RTX: Metro Exodus. I haven't even played it yet - keep putting it off since I know I'll probably become obsessed with it when I do. A 3080 will be a good excuse to start the game.

I wonder if AMD is gonna be able to compete with big navi. I think they have a announcement on the 9th, but it's gonna have to be pretty spectacular.

I wouldn't count them out. As long as they can match or exceed the raw GPU computing. RTX and the other proprietary stuff doesn't really matter, until there's some universal standard. Most serious gamers are also just as polarized as our politics. You're either NVidia or AMD - especially if you own a Free-Sync or GSync monitor.

NVidia supports Free-sync on my monitor so could use either card.

I suspect AMD's new card will have performance between the 3070 and 3080 and will be priced accordingly. I doubt their ray tracing performance will match NVIDIA's since it's their first kick at the can.
I always buy whatever gives me the best bang for the buck performance wise. For some bizarre reason, the AMD cards have been $100 less for the last 3 I've bought, in my price range of $300.

I know I've probably stated this before but despite all I've read about cryptocurrency, I still don't fully understand why it's worth anything. Having said that, I wish I would've bought a few hundred dollars of bitcoin when it was $3 but I suppose the same thing can be said for stocks.

The best we can do is place an order and wait for it to eventually be filled.

I guess they're mining something other than bitcoin. Bitcoin computing requirements have gotten to the point where it's not cost effective to use GPUs over ASICs.
