As posted here.

3dfx's top-of-the-range Voodoo 5 5500 graphics card won't be of much use to gamers keen on getting their hands on Intel's top-of-the-range Pentium 4.

While the 5500's VSA-100 3D graphics chip and its drivers are fully compatible with P4 and Screaming Sindy's second set of Extensions, the card isn't compatible with P4 mobos, 3dfx has admitted.

Voodoo 3 cards are incompatible too. Only Voodoo 4 boards can be plugged into P4-equipped PCs.

As much as I don't like 3DFX this is bad news for the PC market. I just hope it is only Intel mobo's that have this problem.

The PC market has thrived because peripherals can be used on any mobo/chipset. The last thing we need is something that rips the market down the middle.

I know 3DFX aren't going to be making anymore boards but there are a lot of people out there with 3DFX gfx cards that will want to upgrade to P4 but can't.

Intel will have to revise their mobo spec or face an even smaller share of the market and watch AMD take over them even more.

Yet another reason to buy a non-3dfx card.

Post by sbp »

As the register article said both Intel and 3dfx deserve the blame for this .

Of course by the time a P4 is a good buy these videocards {V3 and V5} will be outdated. 3dfx may even be out of business by then. Or even more likely bought out. Image
