Anybody here done it and is there a big enough performance gain for me to even bother trying it?

I got mine up from 183 to 195 before it started to have troubles. It wasn't worth the crashes that I was getting so I turned it back down. With cooling for the video ram we shall see about cranking it back up :)

The card is already optermised to the full. Radeond use a different memory technology than the nvidia cards. You will see little difference when overclocking the Radeon. I suppose if you wait long enough for better driver for the Radeon things will improve then, but it has already been a long enough wait for me.

I just tried the command:
r_ext_texture compression 0

in Quake3 to make the skies look better, but I loose 20fps! What's up with that? Anybody know? I get 45 with texture compression and 65 without.

The skies look a lot better with it on, but I don't think it's worth 20fps! Anybody else get similar effects?

Pure crap. There can be a very beneficial advantage to overclocking. Also try these reg entires. Email if you want more info. Had mine for almost 5 months and it is tweaked!

I am going on my tests. I o\clocked my Winfas geforce 256 rev b ddr and got around 20-30fps increase in Q3. with my TNT 2 Ultra i also got a great peformance increase when o clocked the memory. Even my old banshe improved about 10 fps when i o\clocked it. With my Radeon 64 i managed to o\clock it to 200/200 and only got an extra 3-5fps increase. So i do not even bother to o\clock this card as i see it as not worth while doing so.

I have not edited my registary because i do not know alot about it .

Taz4158 what benefits have you had with o\clocking the Rad?. please tell.

Overclocking from 166->183 gave a significant performance increase. However past that, it seemed to run out of gas. Didn't offer a significant performance increase so I wouldn't even bother. Remember that ATI was originally shooting for 200 core for their high end cards but dropped it back to 183. This is because there is hardly a difference between these two and so the extra cost would not justify the performance boost. Makes you wonder how much better the Radeon 2 will be. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the video card. I am happy your parents let you use it even though it is not Christmas yet.

heh, yep. Thanks Pidge! Though, I'm starting to hear my motherboard fuss about the card. It's the famous Abit KA7/Radeon problem. Random lock-ups, blank screens. I knew about this before I got it; so I am in no way blaming it on you ;)

I'm gonna check out the rage3d.com forums and see what people have to say. I know theres a way to fix it, it's just the question of weather I want to put forth the effort :) I've been thinking of going with an Asus A7V + Tbird for a while now, hehe. Thanks again, Pidge. I'm looking forward to using all the features it has!

Yeah you get a pretty good boost going from 166 to 183 in 32 bit Quake3 at higher resolutions:
