making vid files smaller

I've got a bunch of TV shows on my HD that I want to back up to CD, but I'm always like 50 MB over and instead of wasting blank space I'd like to make them smaller. I've done a google search and tried virtualdub but I'm not having any luck. Anything out there free that'll do that for me? Something like a mpg to divx converter...?

Just a thought, are you wanting to be able to watch them from the CD or just store them? Is 50MB too much to overburn? Nero does support OverBurn but I don't know how much? Have you tried using tmpeg to cut things out like the credits and what not?

I'm just storing them/backing them up sorta thing. I've found some apps that do it but so far nothing free...

Pop $100 for a DVD burner and another $25-$40 for about 50 disks if you got it to pop! Well worth it!
If not, try Tmpgenc to resize your files. Been a long time since I used it myself. It will let you cut some and change your various settings like bit rates. I used it a few times, but for me that stuff takes too long, I just capture real close to the correct size for DVDs now and If I get a little over sized I use DVD shrink.
Tmpgenc is(or was) a free program and does mpeg1 files and some others I think. Like I said been along time. Tmpgenc Plus does the same thing plus mpeg2 files for DVDs, but it costs.

windows media encoder... I think i know you can capture with it and you can make move files for pocket pc's and such i would try that if i were you
