My Pixel 2XL USB-C jack stopped working for audio and data transfer

Postby FlyingPenguin » Tue Sep 22, 2020 11:29 am

According to some forums I Googled, this is a common problem and requires replacing the board. Only thing my USB-C port will do as of a week ago is charge the phone. Windows PCs will not recognize it as a USB device (so can't transfer files) and ear buds and audio jack adapter no longer work.

Since it's a couple of years old, it's out of warranty. I'm not going to worry much about it. I mainly use BT audio in the car, and BT earbuds nowadays. File transfer is actually faster and easier via network file copy to my server using ES File Explorer Pro.

I'll probably be moving to a Pixel 4XL next year anyway, because it would nice to have wireless charging, although I'm not thrilled that it doesn't have a fingerprint sensor anymore, and uses face recognition instead. Sounds like that would be problematic with Covid right now.

I love the Pixel 2. It's easily the best phone I've ever owned. Still has good battery life and performance.

Why not have it fixed or buy a used one to replace the board?

Phone still works fine. Not sure it's worth spending the money. Might look into fixing it once I replace it, as it would still be a good backup phone.

I love my Pixel 3.
Only issue I've had was the battery bulged so I found some videos and replaced it myself. Very easy. I prefer the fingerprint reader over the facial recog.

Both my 3XL and my wifes 3 ran into a hardware failure about 2-3 months after the warranty expired. On hers, the back camera shakes non-stop. On mine the battery drains very fast and it can't be charged by any official Google chargers. Both required a replacement main board to fix. I love the phone, but pissed off at Google's response of tough shit, it's out of warranty. There is another class action brewing which I submitted info, so who knows what will happen. I ended up picking up a new one for $400. That should hold me over until maybe a 5XL. Fingerprint reader is pretty much a deal breaker for me, so glad they decided to bring it back.

Hmmm. Wasn't aware the Pixel 5 was supposed to (at least before Covid) come out at the end of this year. If it's got a fingerprint reader, I'll probably wait for that.

Articles state that it should have the fingerprint reader on the back and the 3.5mm audio jack is back.

I'll have to keep the Pixel 5 in mind if something happens to my S9+. It checks all the boxes for me plus it looks like it has a flat screen. The Edge screen on my Galaxy can me annoying.

FP. Did you try cleaning the port with contact cleaner? I'm assuming the port failed since it's common but it would be nice if it was just dirty.

Yeah, first thing I tried was contact cleaner, just in case.

Yeah, first thing I tried was contact cleaner, just in case.

Really, it's no big deal, except the occasions when I drive the 2013 Yukon, which is my work truck for hauling crap to the dump, and working on the property. It has BT but it only supports the phone, not media, so I used to use a USB-C audio adapter. The Pexel 2 has really loud speakers so I just use those now.

I keep a pair of BT buds in the car hooked up to a lighter jack for charging, and I have another set at home for working out. BT ear protectors for mowing and chain sawing.

It ANNOYS me, but I don't REALLY need it. And as I said previously, I was already using network file transfers because they're faster and easier.

Sadly it also affects the mouse/keyboard function of USB-C. One workaround for a broken touch screen I've used, to recover data from a phone, is to connect a wireless USB mouse/keyboard combo.
PRO TIP: Also makes it a LOT easier to setup a new phone with a keyboard & mouse. Especially having to enter dozens of logins for apps the first time, with my crazy long passwords.

From what I've read, the entire USB controller chip dies. Charging is apparently handled outside the USB chip, so it's not affected.

That's exactly how I'd describe AT&T - Fake and Expensive.
