Mac Forever!
For value on a work/school laptop, I still go to apple. Their cases are strong, the innards are mounted on rubberized gimbals, at 5 lbs they're light, and at 1050$ for one with a G4 800mhz they're affordable, too. Sure, most games will not run on them, but all I ever play is BG2 and Diablo 2 anyway, so it's not much of a loss. The 5 hour battery life is also a major benifit (and yes, I do clock 5 hours on my 1.2 year old Ibook 800mhz G3, which is more than twice what some comparitively cost laptops get). And here's the clincher: The Ibook has an easily moddable outer shell, that, when cleaned with a little paint remover, can be made clear or painted in all sorts of translucent colors.
C'mon-what self respecting computer not does not want a bunch of blue LED's (easy to install) and a giant case window on his laptop?
That said, the Centrino books are also pretty nice, but I'm staying far away from X86 until I learn Linux.
