Had a LONG drawn out text message discussion with my a-hole brother, and I wanted to document it. Wasn't looking forward to copying and pasting 67 text messages.

Did a quick search on Lifehacker and found a free app that copies SMS messages to a text file or .CSV. It allows you to backup everything or filter by conversation and date, so it was easy to specify my brother's conversation thread and today's date.

...but how often does one need to save old text messages once you've read them? To date, I've never needed to delete any text messages so they're all still there and sometimes I refer to old ones for reminders on certain things or dates but otherwise, they could be deleted and I wouldn't miss them.

Rarely need it myself, and I backup my whole phone every month (SMS included) but I wanted a transcript of that text session for a future "I TOLD YOU SO" retort. :)

I feel you.
We backup text messages for clients, to be presented in court if necessary.

Nice Find. I use MyPhoneExplorer to back up text messages but it requires a desktop client. It will also sync my outlook calendar and contacts too.
