Spent an hour on the phone with a tech at Verizon who tried to diagnose it on his end, and no joy. He escalated to an engineer and when I mentioned that I have been deferring the Lollipop update on my wife's phone (because she hates change) he said that was the problem. The stock Android SMS stack in KitKat was broken by some change in Verizon's network in the last few days, and he's been getting other calls about it.
To test that I put her SIM card in a spare Moto-X I have that's been upgraded to Lollipop, and SMS worked fine. So after thanking the engineer I upgraded her phone and all 65 messages that have been in limbo for 3 days immediately poured in.
Now I'll have to deal with the cussing and gnashing of teeth when she realizes how much they changed (F'd up IMO) the Adroid Calendar App, and the Contacts.
But yeah, if you have a KitKat (Android 4.4.4) phone on Verizon, and your text messages stop coming in, and you've been deferring the Lollipop update, now you have no choice.
